how do you hold onto a variable you grabbed at [0] in an on bar close environment when [0] is always changing?

Hi trader3000a, thanks for posting. All scripts are contained within a C# "class" which lets you create storage variables at the class level e.g.

public class MyStrategy : Strategy
{​
private double storageVariable;

protected override void OnBarUpdate()
{
    storageVariable = Close[0];
}

how do i keep that variable from changing when the next bar closes?

Hi trader, that will take more C# code, it depends on when you need to reset it. The code needs to be wrapped around an IF statement that must become true for the variable to change. e.g.

if(<condition to update variable>)
{
storageVariable = Close[0];
}

One example would be keeping track of the highest high seen during the lifetime of the script.

OnBarUpdate()
{
if(High[0] > MaxValue)
MaxValue = High[0];
