After speaking with our development team this is expected behavior since MB Trading does not support daily bars before the session close.

any updates on why the volume spikes on a refresh or when you restart it

Unfortunately when connected to MB Trading real time volume can show different than what is shown for the historical volume. This is the information that is sent through MB Trading's API and is then displayed within NinjaTrader.
