Well edited the windows reg. to disable core parking but it had little effect on the speed or stability of NT.

Retested with 64gb ram and it took longer to hit the 90% ram full mark so as a result it was processing at 25% for a longer period of time before it choked out at 8%.

Guess I should have bought that server board with 512gb ram

Workstation hardware upgrade question multicore advantage?

Unfortunately this is as expected since processes related to charts, indicators and the main GUI are limited to one thread. Multi threads are used when running backtests or optimizations in the Strategy Analyzer and order processing.
If using NT7 for charting, chart trading, indicators and no backtesting, strategy analyzing. Is it correct to assume that a Core i5 computer with a 2.7GHz CPU will run NT7 exactly the same as a Core i7 clocked at the same speed? Given the same memory, number of other apps, etc.

Is there something I'm oversimplifying or mis-implying from the previous quote?

I'm looking for a new laptop and don't want to have to go crazy with a mobile workstation 12 pound monster core i7 if I can find a smaller (ultrabook 15 inch perhaps) one with lots of USB ports (maybe a dock instead), extra miniPCIe, and a matte screen, core i5.

I cant say for sure but from my experience, if you are not backtesting or optimizing you will not be utilizing more than one core.

If this is true a 4 core @2.7 = 6 core @2.7 except for the fact the six core will give you more open threads to run other programs.

More cores supposedly will be utilized in the next version of the software but know one knows when they will release a new version of the software.

I would look at the ivy bridge processors as they will give you better on board video and battery life in a laptop.

Not necessarily. The i5 and the i7 are different generations of processor, and, at least, according to the Intel literature, an i7 will outperform an i5 at the same core speed. However, I really doubt that the difference will be noticeable for an application like NT. You also have to take into account what else will be running, as the i7 design does handle multitasking a shade better than the i5.
