Loss of connection

I have to use an unmanaged order methodology. In there you have options on how to handle connection loss. I'm curious if connection loss is more than your losing internet connection on your system. Are there other cases where this might occur? For example, your system loses connection to the brokerage on their end. If so, is there a way for the code to recognize loss of connection. For example, if the loss of connection exceeds some specified length of time, I would like to send an email/text message informing me of this situation.
