How is the simulated data created? Is it based on a model of the instrument being used? If so, would it be possible to simulate historical data against which to backtest?

Simulated data from the 'Simulated Data Feed' connection is created out of thin air,
making mostly random movements in the general direction according to the setting
from the 'Trend Slider'.

Yes, you can use the Simulated Data Feed as your connection when backtesting
with the Strategy Analyzer. When doing so, the intent is to test the strategy logic
inside your Strategy -- that is, IMHO, the Simulated Data Feed primarily helps to
test trend based signals for trade entry, but it is also useful to test your trade
management logic, such as a trailing stop loss, etc.

Generally speaking, it is the NinjaScript programmer who will probably be most
interested in the Simulated Data Feed connection, since they can benefit from
its use during testing.

PS:
Trading Hours should be set to 'Default 24x7', esp on weekends.

bltdavid is correct. The Simulated Data feed connection creates simulated data locally on your PC that is not based on real market movements.

The Simulated Data feed could be used for backtesting strategies using the Strategy Analyzer.
