Strategy modification

I recently purchased a strategy from someone and have been trying to optimize it for my liking. I noticed a few adjustments I would like to make in the code, but when i reached out to the developer, they told me that I cant change the code which I found to be unusual if I purchased it. Now if I was using it and didn't pay for it, I could understand, but not when I fully purchased the strategy. If anyone could help I would greatly appreciate it
