Template Erratic Across Different Bar Intervals

Very strange things are happening in NT8 compared to NT7: when a template consisting of only internal settings or internal indicators is applied to a chart, and a different bar interval is chosen, the chart loses its template. (This is not a problem with NinjaScripts as no new scripts are applied or incorporated.)

Steps to reproduce problem: 1) start with a new installation of NT8.0.1.0, 2) add the daily ES contract in default candle format, 3) change the bar wick size to 3, 4) in the chart properties change the default Font size to Arial 14px., 5) Now change the bar style from candle to OHLC, with a bar width of 3. 6) Set the up bars black, and the down bars red. 7) Save these settings as a chart template called "TestTemplate". 8) Now change the bar period from "Daily" to "60 Minute".

Upon step 8, the chart loses it's template, and reverts to candles from OHLC. This behavior did not happen in NT7. When the TestTemplate is loaded again, the OHLC bars re-appear as expected. But why were the template settings lost on the bar interval change only?

    Thanks,
    Joe

    Hello Joe_T,
    Thank you for your post,

This is due to the Data Series window Presets (right click on the chart > Data Series). Each chart Type has it's own set of saved Presets, so when switching from the Daily chart type to Minute, the Minute Preset settings are used instead of what was set for the Daily.

To prevent this from occurring, you must save the Presets for each chart Type you use. Otherwise, when switching intervals, the settings will change (see the bottom right of the Data Series window.

We look forward to assisting further.

That should not occur when a Template is loaded. That is the very purpose of a template. This behavior did not occur in NT7, and it should not occur in NT8.

        Hello Joe_T,
        Thank you for your post,

I tested this on my end and this is the same behavior as with NinjaTrader 7, likely you have already set the Default in 7 so you're not seeing the same on your end. See the below video where a template is saved in 7 for a Daily chart, but chart type reverts to the Candlestick chart type when the intervals are changed.

I will, however, submit a feature request on your behalf regarding applied chart template settings overriding Chart Type presets in NinjaTrader 8.

Thank you. The actual answer is that when the bar interval is changed on a chart, the candle or bar properties take on whatever properties are stored in the Default template. It took me a while to research this, but your answer was quite helpful. It would still be a great enhancement, since one is working on a chart - not to have the applied template over-ridden with the default template, just to change bar intervals. Presumably, if one does not want the same properties applied to the new bar intervals, they would release the applied template before switching. Otherwise, it's just more configuration to load the applied template again.

          Thanks for your help.
          Joe
