    Corrupted platform (NinjaTrader 8)

My platform is corrupted and it's been around 36 hrs and support is still saying the problem is due to 3rd pty add-ons, even though they all worked fine before NT got corrupted in a stupid Windows Backup through OneDrive.

Does anyone see any harm in trying the following:
    • Rename NinjaTrader 8 folder in Documents, rename NinjaTrader 8 folder in Program Files
    • Re-install NinjaTrader 8 from fresh download
    • Run Import from backup file I exported 4/11 before the Windows Backup and OneDrive corrupted all the files

    Hello vickisb,

    Thank you for the message.

What you are describing is a completely fresh installation and then using a backup file to restore all of your files.
    • This shouldn't "harm" anything, and the reason we always suggest "Renaming" those specific folders instead of "Deleting" them is because you can always change the name back, or go into that folder and pull specific files out as needed.
    • It is harder to bring back files that have been "Deleted" especially if the Recycle bin was emptied, or too full to begin with so now the files would be outright gone.
      • So, as long as you Rename those folders instead of Delete them, you can always undo any of the steps you took and get the files back.
Here are the full steps if you would like to completely uninstall and reinstall NinjaTrader.
    • Close all running applications.
    • Navigate to your Documents folder > Right-click on the 'NinjaTrader 8' folder > Rename > rename the folder to 'NinjaTrader 8 OLD'. DO NOT delete this folder.
    • Uninstall NinjaTrader within Windows Control Panel.
    • Navigate to C:\ > Program File (x86) > Delete the 'NinjaTrader 8' folder if it exists
    • Reboot your PC.
    • Once these steps are completed, please log in to your dashboard and download and install NT8:
From here, you will want to sign back in, re-enable Multi-provider Mode, and then re-configure your Connection and test if NinjaTrader is opening and working as expected.
From here, you could reimport your backup file.

The goal of NinjaTrader Support is to get your base NinjaTrader Platform working as expected. Then if we can do some steps within the scope of our support to resolve the add-on issues, that is bonus.
    • From there, it is technically up to the user and the developer of the add-ons to investigate why they may not be working as expected and resolve that.
    • The user agreed to this before importing any add-ons as shown below:
The NinjaTrader Support team will do what we can within the scope of our support, but if at the end of the day, the only thing not working is the 3rd party add-ons, we can provide the steps to remove all of the add-ons from the platform so that the user can reimport them back in 1-by-1.

While a backup file will often work for importing add-ons back into a new installation, if the import is done on a new installation, it is possible some Compile Errors will appear due to the NinjaScripts having a new file path than what they did before and the user simply needs to re-add the references in.
    • "Are you missing a directive or assembly reference?" This error is caused when NinjaTrader is searching for a reference to a .dll file, and the reference does not exist.
      • Steps to Resolve
        • Right-click within the NinjaScript Editor window and select "References".
        • Click "Add".
        • Locate the .dll file for the file mentioned in the error.
        • Click "Open" to add the reference.
        • Click "OK" and recompile.
    • Video Example of Resolution: Repeat these steps for each indicator listed, and once all of the errors disappear, you will be able to import, remove, and edit your add-ons normally.
Otherwise, the user could reach out to the developer for specific help with that Developers specific set of add-ons and getting them to work.

Or, remove all of the 3rd party add-ons from the platform and reimport the ones you still use from the .ZIP files and then create a new backup file made for that PC specifically.
    • This might be a little more time consuming, but you would know the new installation on your New PC has all new files and didn't carry over any extra/old files add-ons that you don't use anymore.

This forum post will remain open for other users to share their insight as well.

If you have any further questions for NinjaTrader Support, please ask those in the direct email thread you already have with our team.

Please let us know if we may provide any further assistance.

Thank you so very much, Clayton. I followed your steps and the platform appears to be running correctly, with all my 3rd pty add-ons working without issue and no errors in the log now, so the problem was clearly in the platform, not the add-ons. I did get an error pop-up during installation, however. Is this a problem? (It wouldn't allow me to scroll down to see the remainder of the message in the popup.

Also, is it advisable to do a Compile in Ninja Script Editor?

        Hello vickisb,

        Thank you for the message.

If you know what Developer created and provided that NinjaScript add-on, then you could ask them why it is appearing and what needs to be done to make it go away.

And yes, doing a compile after importing new things is always a decent idea as it is possible that introduced some file path or duplicate dependency issues and is causing your current error.

Please use the following steps to see where the compile errors are coming from and send that in your response so we may provide more detailed information on how to resolve them:
        • Open NinjaTrader
        • Go to the Control Center > New > NinjaScript Editor > Right-click on the background > Click Compile
        • If any errors appear, make the window full screen and then send us a screenshot of as many of the errors as possible.
          • If you are unsure of how to take a screenshot, I recommend using the Windows Snipping tool.
            • Click on the Windows Icon at the bottom of your screen and type the word "Snip"
            • Click on the Snipping tool, click New, then click and drag around the area you want to screenshot
            • Click File > Save As > Save the screenshot where you can find it
            • Please click here for a video demonstration

Depending on what errors are appearing, we may be able to provide steps to resolve it, otherwise, you may be able to remove the specific files that are causing the error and cause them to stop.
        • Our team does NOT have any further insight on the add-ons from other companies, so if the errors are not specifically stating which files to remove, or removing them causes errors with other NinjaScripts, we are back to needing to remove all add-ons and you import them back in 1-by-1.

We look forward to your response and resolving your inquiry.
