Why is NT so slow after a period of in-activity?

To give context. I have Trading View on one laptop(macbook), and NinjaTrader on my PC.

I can put the laptop to sleep, open it 2 hours later and TradingView has reloaded all the missing data within 2 seconds and everything is where I left it ready to go.

With NT, it takes at least 1-2 minutes to get to the same point where I was at. Upon waking the computer, the chart looks the same as it was when I closed it and it just stays there for a few seconds. Then I have to go and manually re-connect to data because it's been disconnected. The loading of the missing 2 hours of data often takes an extremely long time. And a lot of the time I get an error like 'the semaphor has been disposed' which causes a shut down.

So the question is, why is NT so sluggish in this regard?

    Hello several,

    Thank you for the question.

Please note that the TradingView and NinjaTrader Desktop platforms are developed with fundamentally different architectures, utilize different servers, and process market data through different mechanisms. As such, performance or chart display comparisons are not truly one-to-one and differences are expected.

To offer an analogy: both a gas-powered Toyota Corolla and an electric Rivian truck are vehicles, but the way they are built and utilize their components is entirely different.

With NinjaTrader Desktop, charting and indicator calculations are processed locally on your machine using your PC's hardware.

Depending on your version of TradingView, it is likely that chart rendering and calculations occur server-side, which offloads resource use from your local device and provides a more uniform display—especially in environments without third-party customization.
    • TradingView may also operate in a more controlled, closed environment without third-party add-ons, which can contribute to its stability and performance consistency.

    1. If your workspace takes a long time to load in or gives errors, this is most often due to the complexity of the workspace and some indicators or add-ons within that Workspace.
    • You can always do a performance comparison by opening NinjaTrader in Safe Mode and test how much faster everything moves outside of your normal workspace without your original setup and indicators:
You can also make a new Workspace > Save it > Restart NinjaTrader to clear everything from the RAM. Then, compare how things perform in this new workspace.
    • Then, reopen NinjaTrader so it opens to this new/empty workspace and then rebuild it while being aware of the performance tips and suggestions within the guide below

    2. It is also important to highlight that NinjaTrader will not function properly when your computer is allowed to sleep or hibernate.
    • If the PC running NinjaTrader enters sleep or hibernation, the platform will likely encounter network issues or interruptions.
    • These disruptions can affect order submission or synchronization until the platform is restarted.
    • There isn't a setting in NinjaTrader to keep it active while the computer sleeps.
    • NinjaTrader requires an active internet connection in order to retrieve data and function correctly.
      • (There will be a new notification that appears any time the PC goes into a suspended state in one of the next few updates to the platform to warn of this)
My recommendation would be to instead set your PC to simply dim or turn off the display after a designated amount of time. More information on these settings can be found at the following link.
If you need to place your computer into sleep or hibernate mode, please be sure and close NinjaTrader first, then once waking your computer, you may reopen the platform to continue trading.

Please let us know if we may provide any further assistance.
