    Unable to restore backup file


    Hello Support,

    I am trying to restore from a backup but get an error related to some file name being too long.

    Please see attached image for details.

    Thank you in advance for your help on this.

    Thank you for posting on the NinjaTrader forums.


    Try moving the backup file to your desktop and renaming the file to something shorter. From there, try going to NinjaTrader and re-importing the file as needed.

      I have tried what was proposed.

      Result is the same.

      See attachments for details.

      This does not appear like the backup file name and its location has anything to do with the issue.

      Maybe it has more to do with a specific file(s) that is in the backup that can't be restored due to a name too long.

      But I can't think of something that I would have saved that has such a long name.

      May I suggest that I upload the backup file somewhere so it's content can be looked at your end ?

      Too bad the message does not identify the file that has the issue.

      FYI, the software is installed at that location on the PC ... C:\Users\xxxxxx\Documents\NinjaTrader 8 .. this takes up 39 characters.

      Also note that the application crashes following this restore attempt.

      Please quickly advise on next step has having a backup that can't be restored is pretty useless.

        In this case, let's try adding .zip to the end of the file name to turn it into a .zip file. Once it has been renamed, try to access the zip file and decompress it assuming you know how to do this.


        If successful, you should be able to see its contents and use the put the back up into \Documents or \Documents\NinjaTrader 8 depending on whether you are looking at the parent folder or its child folders.

          Hello NinjaTrader_LuisH ,

          I have already done the .zip renaming and was able to restore a specific portion that I needed.

          Still, this does not solve the issue as I would very much prefer to use the built in restore function instead of manipulating the backup file and move stuff manually (to much risk of errors).

          I had a quick look a the zip file content and could not see any file that would be more than 260 char long (and we already know that the directory name is +- 40 char so this is not the issue).

          So I am back with my proposition to upload the zip file so you could also have a look as I may have missed something.

          Depending on what file it is, then it would be appropriate for the application to make sure file name will fit the restore limitations,

          This is why I think it is valuable for the support team to look into this by reviewing the zip file.

            It's not an issue with the file itself, the error message is referring to specific file path, file name or both. If you'd like us to test with your file you can email us at clientservices@ninjatrader[dot]com with your file attached.

              I had this same error when restoring files. My issue was with the filenames I used to name the ATM & ATM Stop Strategies: they were too long.
