Error while updating to latest version

Trying to upgrade my version from 8.1.2.1 to the latest 8.1.4 (because I'm tired of the bugs in 8.1 and I'm looking for more adventure)

But .. I'm getting this error:

    Error getting file security
    C:\Users\Tim\Desktop\Documents\NinjaTrader 8\
    GetLastError: 5

    Help?

Also, I submitted this to Support but when I clicked "Submit," the page refreshed and I have no idea if it went through. Can't find anywhere I can "check on my tickets" or see anything related to any tickets I've ever submitted. Seems counter-intuitive.

    Thanks,
    Tim

    Just curious,
how did your 'My Documents' folder get located in 'C:\Users\Tim\Desktop'?

    That seems odd ...

I noticed that too .. and it looks like it's been there a while. I still have a "Users/Tim/Documents" folder .. and there's stuff in it.

I have no clue .. but I'm a developer who's not installed a new version of an OS for a while .. always upgrading.

It looks like it's been there for at least 4 years.

There must be a pointer somewhere in Windows that sends new installs to that directory instead of the default Documents folder.

        Hello TraderTimmy71,

Thank you for posting on the forums.

This error typically means NinjaTrader does not have the proper access to that folder. Curious as to why the folder is on the Desktop as well, do you have another NinjaTrader 8 folder in the \Documents folder that has a more recent 'Modified Date'? My thought process here is that maybe we should be renaming the folder that's on the Desktop so the installer only looks for the one in the Documents folder.

I look forward to your response.

This was installed in the "Desktop/Documents" folder last year ... I can tell you that I had a helluva time getting it installed in the first place. Can't remember what all I had to adjust, but it took me more than a month of back-and-forth with support to get it properly installed.

As a developer, that didn't give me much confidence.

Oh ... and I think I remember what happened with the Documents folder ... OneDrive.

Microsoft thought it was a good idea that installing OneDrive meant it could take over all my Windows folders and "move them" into a place where it would backup. SO it did. And effed up all kinds of stuff. This seems to be a leftover of that I didn't notice (because I use a "Documents" folder on an external drive and have for more than a decade).

            Ah-hah!

            OneDrive strikes again.

It wrecks havoc for way too many folks.

I sooooo wish NT would provide the ability to install
that darned user folder 'NinjaTrader 8' anywhere we
darned well pleased -- then folks could easily get
            away from this OneDrive scourge.

But, sigh, NT seems beholden to only allowing its
user data folder to exist in the My Documents folder.

This reluctance to allow a flexible location has never
been adequately explained to my technical ears.

            -=o=-

            It appears ...
You've been screwed by OneDrive, and by NT's
silent head in the sand response to making their
            product interact safely with OneDrive.

            You have my sympathies.

            Just my 2˘.

Figured it out ... putting solution here for anyone else with the same problem.

The culprit was indeed the /Desktop/Documents ... once I moved the windows pointers for Documents back to it's correct position under "C:/Users/Tim", NT8 installed just fine. Found a post on StackExchange that gave locations in the Registry.

              Instructions:

              1) Load Regedit

              2) Navigate to the key HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders, and set the value named Personal to %USERPROFILE%\Documents.

              3) Logout and login back, then navigate to the key HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders. The value named Personal should read C:\Users\YOURNAME\Documents. If this is not the case, set it to the above value.

FYI ... I didn't have to logout & login ... and I found the pointer in at least one other key in the first section.

                Excellent news!

But, just to be safe ...
You might also consider disabling OneDrive completely.

                Just saying.
