    Market permissions

    Hi everyone.
My broker is Interactive Brokers where I subscribe to several markets (AMEX, CBOT, CME, COMEX, NASDAQ, NYMEX, NYSE AND TSX).
I place the vast majority of my trades through NinjaTrader 8.
Last week, I also subscribed to Kinetick. Do I also need to subscribe to the same markets at Kinetick? And pay twice???

    Thanks.

    Hello M_ichel,

    Thank you for the message.

Interactive Brokers does NOT provide Historical Tick Data.
    • If you need that data for the various instruments you trade, then subscribing to that same data through Kinetick is one way you could get it.
So, you don't have to subscribe to the data through Kinetick. That is totally up to you and if you want the additional data.

Please know that Options Data from Kinetick will NOT work for trading Options. If trading options through Interactive Brokers, you would have to use the options data from them directly.

Please let us know if we may provide any further assistance.

Hi Clayton. Thanks for the response.
You said: "Please let us know if we may provide any further assistance".
Oh Boy! Do I ever need assistance!!! I wish I could understand what you are saying.
For instance, when you say "Interactive Brokers does NOT provide Historical Tick Data", so what??? What, exactly, do they provide??? All I know is that when I look at TWS, during RTH, all the prices are moving. Instantly. Whether the chart is on a Daily view or a 1-minute, prices are updating.

Then, you say "If you need that data for the various instruments you trade, then subscribing to that same data through Kinetick is one way you could get it." Well... How am I supposed to know if I need that data??? Would I see any symptoms, any problems, any messages???

(By the way, I don't trade Options. Just stocks (mostly U.S. stocks, listed on NYSE or NASDAQ, etc.) Some Canadian stocks, also, hence the subscription, at IBKR, to TWS data)

About Kinetick: I subscribed last Thursday (February. 20). Without market data, as far as I can tell (because when I went through the subscription process, it seemed to have "forgotten" that I had just been going through the various questionnaires to subscribe to their special deal with the CME, etc...
This morning after the markets opened, I connected to Kinetick (only, not IBKR) and none of my charts was doing anything. Daily charts just displaying candlesticks up to yesterday. 10-minute charts were stopped at 16:00 (last night's close). This makes me think that I'm only getting end-of-day data from Kinetick, although this is not what I thought I was going to get.
I've submitted two tickets to Kinetick (2025-02-21 and 2025-02-24) and I've had no response so far. There is no way for me to follow up either on the state of those tickets or even on the state (and particulars) of my account there. They did (2025-02-20) send me a user Id and password, but that's all. As things stand, I'm wondering if Kinetick is even an active company!!!

Sorry for the rambling... Let's get back to the question of market data: is there any place (video at NinjaTrader, or YouTube or anything else on the Internet) that would explain clearly what market data is, how it works, in the type of context that I'm in: having IBKR as the broker, but using NinjaTrader as a front-end to place the actual trades?

      Thanks for your attention!

        Hello M_ichel,

        Thank you for the message.

        1. Historical Tick Data is needed to see the prior bars on any "Tick" Based chart. So, if only using Interactive Brokers, you would NOT see the Historical Bars loaded onto a Tick, Renko, Range, Volume, or any other Tick Based Bar Type. If you have an add-on or strategy that depends on the Historical Tick Data, then it wouldn't work as expected.
        • You may click the following link to see what types of data are provided through each connection - Data by Provider
        • More information on the different types of Market Data and why they matter - Why do you need Market Data?
          • We do not have a more specific guide or video about Interactive Brokers data since that is being provided from Interactive Brokers. You could ask their support team for more detailed information if you are unable to find it at the link in the next bullet point.
        • Historical Data Limitations in place from Interactive Brokers side - IB | Historical Data Limitations/Pacing Violation
        • More information on the what Bar Types require Tick Data - Base Data Type used to build Bars
        • Finally, Interactive Brokers has a different data subscription that has to be activated for use with 3rd party platforms like NinjaTrader. (Just because you see charts updating and moving in real-time within the TWS Platform, it does not guarantee you have the additional 3rd party data enablements. They have a special data situation where they will provide TWS with data but not 3rd party platforms without the extra enablement)
        2. Every user has a different trading situation, setup, and goals so we are unable to provide any specific suggestions on what you need either:
        • We cannot say if you need the historical data or not, some people don't need it while others do. It is up to how you trade and what features and indicators you use.
        • If you notice data or information missing from your chart, that could be one way to tell you are missing something
        • If you use any 3rd party add-ons or strategies and they don't work as expected, ask their developers if they depend on Historical Tick Data, then if yes, you need to supplement it.

        3. While I am unable to provide much insight for Kinetick, I do know they have their "Base Subscription" which only provides Delayed Data which doesn't work in NinjaTrader. The user would then have to subscribe to the additional exchanges they want real-time data for to see that moving in the platform.
        • Kinetick is a very small team so it can take a little longer to hear a response from them. You are always welcome to send a reply on your prior email and ask for an update. Once the technician is available, they will respond.
        • Once you have the Kinetick Account and Data set up, you would set this up using the "Kinetick" connection type within NinjaTrader. NOT the "Kinetick: End of Day (Free)" as this will only provide Daily bars and no real-time data ever.
        4. Finally, for a user to see their Interactive Brokers Accounts within the NinjaTrader Platform, the user would have to add the Multi-broker add-on subscription to their NinjaTrader Username:
Please let us know if we may provide any further assistance.
