Charts stop updating
It's fairly common for charts to simply stop getting updating with new price bars. One way to bring them back is to select a different security, then re-select the original security. The new pricing appears. I thought this only happened on the daily charts, so I tried intra day and it's a problem there too. This means all automatted strategies are highly unreliable and likely to lose customer money. I build an automatted charting system using Excel in the 90s that was 100x more reliable than this. Please tell me there is a fix for this? My internet connection is not sketchy (I'm in Long Beach, CA)Tags: None

Hello go2toa,
Thank you for posting.
Is your PC going into Sleep or Hibernation mode when you see this behavior? If so this can cause connection issues within the platform therefore suggest changing your PC Power Options to Never go into Sleep or Hibernation mode.
If your PC is not going into Sleep or Hibernation mode please reset your instruments and Trading hour templates with the steps below.- First, disconnect from any data providers by navigating to the Control Center > Connections menu, and left-click on "disconnect" that appears to the right when hovering your mouse over any active connection
- Next, reset your instruments by navigating to the Control Center > Tools > Database Management
- In the Database Management window, under the "Update instruments" section, ensure that "General properties", "Futures expiries" and "Symbol mappings" options are checked and then click Update
- In the Database Management window, under the "Update trading hour templates" section, ensure that "Predefined trading hours templates" is checked and then click Update
- Lastly, restart NinjaTrader for the changes to occur

From all these settings, I was missing just one. I updated it using your instructions and saw improvement in reliability. Thanks. However, it still cuts itself off randomly every few days. This tells me people working at Ninja Trader don't put their money on the line with this tool, because it's only a matter of time before losing. My service provider is Spectrum and they disconnect about once every 24 months.
Question: Why does Think Or Swim remain connected 100% and Ninja Trader has a red dot and financial loss when we get home from work? Shouldn't this be an open bug issue that developers are desperately trying to fix?

I have also provided additional steps you may take to troubleshoot your connection losses:- Ensure that your computer is not turning off your Network Adapter to conserve power:
- Restart NinjaTrader
- Right-click on your Start button
- Select 'Device Manager'
- Expand 'Network Adapters'
- Right-click on your Network Adapter and select Properties > Power Management
- Uncheck 'Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power' option
- Click 'OK' to save the changes
- Do this for all Network Adapters
- Clear your DNS
- Open the Command Prompt
- In the command prompt, run this command: ipconfig /flushdns
- Turning off any VPN Network Software
- If you are not already and the option is available to you, connect to the internet using an ethernet cable. Wireless connections are significantly more unreliable.
- Ensure exceptions have been added into any firewall/antivirus/backup programs for the Documents > "NinjaTrader 8" folder.

Thank you Christopher. I took these additional steps. I have noticed an increase in reliability...I'm not sure if you improved things on your side at the same time but at the end of the day, we just want a reliable connection, even if 100% of the issue needs to be corrected locally.
I can offer add'l tips to other users experiencing data freezes:
A green status button is an important indicator of your connection, but not 100% reliable by itself. Look at the charts (ideally 4 or more) and verify they all end on the same number (shown on the x axis). They should be equal. Data freezes usually don't impact all securities the same way. You should not have some charts ending today and some charts ending with tomorrow's date. Change the ticker on the chart that seems behind, then change it back and you should see it "catch up". That confirms it was frozen.
When the last number on the x axis (time) does not match up with others, or just looks stale, it may not be an NT issue -- some ag products, such as Oats, are designed to go offline a while in the afternoon. If you are troubleshooting stale data, it is virtually impossible to do so with these farm products. Choose other products.
If you are still troubleshooting connectivity issues, either paper trade, or trade only one contract with a small margin, eg. MCL and consider setting the frequency higher (eg. 15 minutes instead of daily) to make freezing more likely. Until it's resolved, even a good system could lose thousands of dollars.
