    onedrive issues windows 11

this has been an issue since starting to use this platform.

first i unlinked onedrive from this pc, then i uninstalled onedrive, following these instructions.

next, i saved my workspaces to a local directory, uninstalled ninjatrader, deleted the folders, restarted my pc and downloaded it again.

after installing, it added a fresh new onedrive folder to my pc, the only thing in this onedrive folder is a documents folder only containing a ninjatrader folder and a ninjatrader backup folder..

what am i doing wrong here? why is it doing this?

because now, whenever i open file explorer, it tells me location is not available and it says explicitly, that this onedrive location is unavailable. now it appears i have lost my back up files as well.

Sorry, I don't have much help to offer (well, maybe... goto the bottom).

Many NinjaTraders users are getting caught by issues w/OneDrive

NinjaTrader refuses to acknowledge the new 800 lb Microsoft gorilla
in the room. That is, the new world order of Windows 11 w/OneDrive.

They continue to expect all NinjaTrader users to resolve this problem
for themselves, offering no help in their core software to alleviate the
OneDrive issue once and for all.

What is that solution, you ask? NinjaTrader has perpetually failed to
provide the simplest of software fixes, which is this: NinjaTrader
refuses to allow the user to select their own location for the
    'NinjaTrader 8' user folder.

I mean, the NinjaTrader software experience provides zero help in
relocating the personalized 'NinjaTrader 8' user folder to somewhere
other than the Documents folder. To wit, the NT installer provides
no such option -- there continues to be zero choice in the matter
    of location.

To me, this is an example of legacy software which now has an
inexplicable dictate caused by the laziness to update the code
to address the modern world of Windows 11 w/OneDrive.

    -=o=-

    Think about it:
Moving the 'NinjaTrader 8' user folder out of the Documents folder
would certainly solve (er, I mean, bypass) all the OneDrive issues.

NinjaTrader has never provided a good enough explanation why
their software does not allow you to locate the 'NinjaTrader 8' user
    folder to somewhere else.

In the prior versions of NT, the legacy MS-based database technology
seemed to be the culprit, but the recent change to SQLite several years
ago eliminated this as a reason.

    -=o=-

My solution was (now several years old):
I setup my Windows 11 user account as a local user, I did not setup
a Microsoft-based network account -- this seemed to be a 'holy grail'
ah-hah moment, because that seemed to stop OneDrive from even
running, which I was perfectly fine with.

    -=o=-

Try setting up a new user account on your Win11 boxen, do whatever
necessary to make the user account a local administrator account
(use Google to find the latest bypass steps, MS seems to hide this
'local account' option more and more). After setting up this new user
account as a local account, install NinjaTrader while logged into that
account. Hopefully, OneDrive will ignore the 'NinjaTrader 8' folder in
that local user's Documents folder. [This local user account now
becomes the user account you login into for trading.]

    -=o=-

Unfortunately, you'll need to keep complaining to NT, keep requesting
help from NT support, and most importantly, raise your voice higher
to demand that NT mgmt prioritize the fix for this issue.

    Just my 2˘.

if my current solution does not work... i might want to give yours a shot.

i had to get chatgpt to help me and google involved with my current fix

i had to go in to the registry and remove all instances of onedrive and then remap the documents folder, the pictures folder, and more folders i'm sure i'm forgetting.

and i had to go into like... local app data roaming....i know im messing something up there.....and remove any traces of onedrive lol

then after restarting my computer and re-installing ninjatrader it did not appear to try and link to onedrive! in fact, it made it's own folders in my local documents folder which i think is what it is supposed to do?

one of my iterations in all of this caused me some alarm because i'd try and open my journal.doc word doc that i just like to write everything in and it said it couldn't find it or it already open... so i knew at that point i'd either messed up pretty bad or i was almost there lol...

        Hello rwlink3z8,

Thank you for posting on the NinjaTrader forums.

Please write into support@ninjatrader[dot]com if you require further assistance resolving this item.

Should be a matter of turning off your backup for your Documents folder so that NinjaTrader lives within a localized folder on your drive only.

        Thank you in advance!
