Failed to process 'ToAdapterThread' causes ATM to not apply on subsequent trades

    Failed to process 'ToAdapterThread' causes ATM to not apply on subsequent trades

    I have been having this issue for months now where my ATM will stop applying after I get the following log entry:

    Failed to process 'ToAdapterThread': 'The process cannot access the file 'C:\Users\brian\Documents\NinjaTrader 8\tmp\zzzf4f3aa928jLog__12-18-2023__261176' because it is being used by another process.'

    When this occurs, a lightning bolt icon will show up next to the ATM I have been using as if Ninja thinks there is an open position and if I execute another trade my ATM will not be applied and my position will be naked with no stop and target. One can see how problematic this can be and it has caused quite a lot of frustration. This causes me to have to restart Ninjatrader in order for this issue to go away but sometimes I can have it occur 3-4 times a day with each time requiring a restart.

    I have attached a screenshot where you can see I have no positions on but my ATM is displaying the lightning bolt icon as if there is an open position.

    Has anyone ever had this issue?

    Thank you for writing in.

    From the error you are getting, it sounds like there is some other program or computer setting that is preventing NinjaTrader from accessing the various files it needs when it needs to.
    • The process cannot access the file zzzf4f3aa928jLog__12-18-2023__261176' because it is being used by another process.'

    This normally means that the Windows Controlled Folder Access, Windows Firewall, Antivirus software, or another program/PC Setting are keeping the NinjaTrader platform from accessing the files it needs to open.

    Please follow the steps below to resolve this error message. Try to open NinjaTrader again between each of the tests below.

    Windows Controlled Folder Access

    Ensure that the Windows Controlled Folder Access is not preventing you from accessing the necessary folders:
    • From your Windows desktop, select Start > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Security > Virus & threat protection.
    • Under Virus & threat protection settings, select Manage settings.
    • Under Controlled folder access, select Manage Controlled folder access.
    • Switch the Controlled folder access setting to Off.

    Windows Firewall

    Ensure that NinjaTrader has been allowed through the Windows Firewall on all networks. Please follow along with this infographic:
    Antivirus Software

    Ensure that NinjaTrader has been added to any 'Exceptions' or 'Allowed Programs/Apps' kind of list within your antivirus software.
    • If you need to add NinjaTrader manually, the file path is as follows:
      • This PC > Local Disk (C: > Program Files > NinjaTrader 8 > bin > NinjaTrader.exe

    If you are still receiving the error message after performing the steps above, please use the following steps to send your log and trace files to the support team directly from your NinjaTrader Platform so we may investigate this behavior further:
    • Within NinjaTrader, go to the Control Center > Help > Email Support...
    • To: Set this to "Platform Technical Support"
    • Subject: Copy and paste the Forum URL
    • Attach: Attach a file, picture, or compressed file to share multiple files/pictures
    • Body: Include any other information you would like to share on the situation
    • Make sure 'Log and Trace files' is checked to include the requested files
      • Send the email

      Thank you Clayton,

      But Windows Controlled Folder Access was already off and Ninjatrader has been allowed through the Windows Firewall on all networks.

      ***Edit***

      Actually, I just saw some boxes are unchecked on the "Allowed apps" for Ninjatrader, namely the boxes under the Private column.

        Hello Rogue_Two,

        Thank you for the update.

        If you are wondering why there are multiple, it is possible there are some legacy file paths, or maybe duplicate permissions from uninstalling/reinstalling NinjaTrader over time.

        If you are using 8.1.2.1, then you could remove all of them and then manually add the current NinjaTrader file path as below. (If using 8.0.28.0, you could do the same thing, but the path is under Program Files (x86) instead):
        • This PC > C: > Program Files > NinjaTrader 8 > bin > NinjaTrader.exe
          • Then, allow it on all networks (some users have even more). We do not want to take the chance of anything blocking NinjaTrader's ability to communicate with the necessary servers.

        If the behavior continues, the next steps are going to be testing in Safe Mode, and then if it still continues in Safe Mode, doing a completely fresh installation of NinjaTrader and testing if it happens in a clean environment.
        • This will help us narrow in on if it is something 3rd party, NinjaTrader itself, or something else within the PC that is preventing NinjaTrader from accessing those files as needed.

          Darn, looks like that did not correct the issue I'm having.

          As you can see, the lightning bolt icon is showing up on my ATM as if a position is still open. Had I made another trade, it would not have had an ATM applied to it.

          As always, it occurs when the log entry "Failed to process 'ToAdapterThread' shows up.

              I have submitted my log and trace files but just wanted to get some more eyes on this issue on the forums. Hopefully I can figure out what it causing this issue soon.
