I prefer to use Visual Studio for development/debugging with NinjaTrader 8\bin\Custom\NinjaTrader.Custom.csproj

but can I just check that I need to compile using NT8.

Yes, but Script Editor does it automatically when you save any of its files, so all you have to do is keep a Script Editor open. It uses a FileSystemWatcher to see when you have written to any of the addon, indicator, strategy, etc. source files and then initiates a recompile when you do.

ignore this if you think its off topic. but how does Visual Studio know to add (ADL,Indicator,MarketAnalzerColumn,Stategy) under each indicator and why?.

Aren't those the referenced class names in the file? @ADL.cs defines the class ADL which is derived from Indicator and in the automatically appended script section at the bottom it makes them accessible to market analyzer columns and strategies...
