Opinions?- Upgrading from 8.0.28.0 to 8.1.x

So I have tried to upgrade to the latest version and having problems using old studies/workspaces/templates. Are other people experiencing similar issues or is it just me.?

Which sort of problems are you having? Did any custom code you use also get upgraded?

      Thanks for the reply.
I was trying to upgrade from 8.0.28.0 to the latest version 8.1.2.0

After installation, the installer told me to re-compile the studies. I tried to do this but got an error on some freebie NT8 study I had installed previously. So then I tried to remove the assembly but the newly installed NT8 wouldn't let me start the Remove Assembly form as it told me that I had to recompile first. So I exited NT8, removed the assembly manually and restarted NT8.
Recompiled the studies including loads of custom ones of my own. All compiled OK without errors.

Restarted NT8 and the default workspace opened but the charts loaded were missing studies. Tried to load a different workspace/chart template but got an error about the xml file being from an old version. One hour wasted. I've now rolled back to 8.0.28.0 again..

By studies, do you mean indicators?

Is the problematic indicator pre-compiled? If it is just source code, you can manually go in and remove the files from the folder to remove the problematic code. When it compiles it would tell you which source file is the problem. You would need to remove (or fix) the source files.

If you use an indicator in a workspace file, and then remove the source code or compiled assembly from the workspace NinjaTrader can potentially remove all indicators from the workspace or chart. It depends on where and how the problematic indicator is used.

Another situation where I have seen this happen is when there is an error when loading an indicator. If it produces an error, all other indicators for that chart are also not loaded. I have seen this when I was developing and indicator and changed the properties. Templates that used that indicator also no longer worked.

I have a pretty extensive set of indicators I have developed and when I upgraded they all worked. I have also never seen an error about loading an old version of XML but all of my workspace files are at least from 8.x

          Yes indicators.

The editor errors were to do with the precompiled freebie library in the bin/custom directory.

Yes - I am aware of the link between removing an assembly removes the indicator from the chart.

The studies/indicators I was referring to are ones that I have written and the source code is in the library. These compiled without any errors.

So to reiterate, everything in the library now compiles. However it turns out that the problem was due to the fact that I had not upgraded a third party library that a vendor had released for Ninjatrader 8.1.x upon which a lot of my order flow indicators are based. Funnily enough after upgrading the vendor library I can now even apply the chart template and my charts now look as expected. Basically the error message telling me I had an old version of Ninjatrader when trying to apply the chart template put me off track!!

I appreciate you trying to help - many thanks for taking the time.
