Closing my position partially. Getting and error when attempting to do this.

I wasn't sure how to title this so let me explain. Today, I went long with 3 contracts and it was with an ATM strategy. I wanted to take profit on just 1 contract and leave the other 2 to run. The way I tried to do this was by simply hitting the Sell Mkt button with the quantity set to 1. However, I kept getting some error...something to do with "RMS". I don't remember exactly what it said and I can't figure out what happened here. Can someone help me figure out what happened and how to prevent this from happening again? I had to close out my whole trade because of this issue.

    Hello Moraha,

Can you please send me your log and trace files from within NinjaTrader.
    • Go to Control Center-->Help-->Email Support
    • Enter "Att Jason, 03951242" in the "Subject" field
    • Make sure "Log and trace files" is enabled
In addition, please include around what time you got into the position, for what instrument and at what price.

Hi Jason. I just went ahead and sent the support request. This is pretty upsetting because I had a good winner today (5 contracts) that I wanted to close partially and let the rest run or break even. I would get the error when I set the quantity to 3 and hit Buy Mkt (I was in a short).

I have not received the email so far. Can you please follow the steps below to manually attach your log and trace files in an email and send it to "platformsupport[AT]ninjatrader[DOT]com".
        • Open the Windows File Explorer (hotkey = Windows key + E) Then navigate to, "Documents" > 'NinjaTrader 8' folder
        • Right-click on the 'log' and 'trace' folders and select Send To> Compressed (zipped) Folder.
        • Send the 2 compressed folders as attachments to "platformsupport[AT]ninjatrader[DOT]com".
        • Put "Att Jason, 03951242" in the subject field of your email.
        • Once complete, you can delete these compressed folders.

          Hi Jason,

I think I figured out the problem but I'm not sure if this is a Ninja Trader issue or my prop firm issue. I use TopStep at the moment and I have a 5 contract trade maximum. So when I use an ATM strategy of 5 contracts (I have let's say a 40 tick profit target and 20 tick stop) and I try to close 2 out of those 5 manually hitting the Sell Mkt button when I'm long, it seems to count those 2 as an additional 2 contracts. That doesn't make sense to me since I'm trying to close part of the position, not open 2 more.

When I don't use an ATM strategy and not have a profit target or hard stop loss, I'm able to close partially just fine. I don't know why this would be treated differently.

Can you tell me what I can do about this?

I think it might be the ATM settings. Try again with ATM strategy selection mode set to 'Select active ATM strategy on order submission'.

This was already selected in the settings. I haven't ever been in there and adjusted anything.

When you are in the long position for 5 contracts with an ATM strategy, I assume the ATM orders have a quantity of 5. I suspect that when you submit the sell market order, it exceeds a limit of your TopStep account.

If you want me to investigate, please send me the log and trace files.
