The multi-provider option wasn't checked. I found the answer in a thread below.

You would think after SEVERAL posts in the forum that Ninjatrader would release the next version with this option already selected so as to avoid these type of posts... Or they can continue making people think that Ninjatrader Brokerage is their only option to use the platform...

It never occurred to me to check for this option, either. When I previously upgraded from the 8.0 track with an earlier version of 8.1.x, I didn't run into this issue. It just upgraded, and I went on my way.
