    MAX and MIN (NOT!)

    Hi Ninja Team,

Can you explain why MAX and MIN are plotting on bar closes rather than bar High or low? (Panel 1) Thanks, Ninja Team.

    Hello ScottW,

    Thanks for your post.

What version of NinjaTrader are you using? Please provide the entire version number. This can be found under Help -> About (Example: 8.0.?.?)

Are you using the MAX and MIN indicators that come default with NinjaTrader?

Or, did you create a custom NinjaScript indicator that plots the MAX and MIN on the chart?

What settings are you using when applying the indicators to the chart?

When adding the MAX and MIN indicators that come default with NinjaTrader on a chart with their default properties, I'm seeing the MAX and MIN plots as expected. See the attached screenshot.

If you apply the indicators to a chart window using the same settings seen in the screenshots, do you see the same behavior I do?

      Brandon,

      Version = 8.1.1.6 64-bit
Yes, I am using the default Ninjatrader indicator.

Yes, I get the exact same result as your post.
However, the indicator description states "MAX - The Maximum shows the maximum of the last n bars"
So, I expect it to indicate the "High" of the bars and not the "Close"
What do you think? Should MAX indicate the Maximum of the bar or should it indicate the Close.

        Hello Scott,

        Thanks for your note.

If you are getting the same results as seen in the screenshot I shared when testing with the default settings then you are getting the maximum and minimum of the last n bars and the indicators are working as they are intended to.

The maximum would be determined by the number of bars you have the indicator set to look back on. By default this is set to 14.

To clarify, what chart style are you using on your chart?

Also, please send me a screenshot of the settings you are using when applying the MAX and MIN indicators to the chart.
        • To send a screenshot with Windows 10 or newer I would recommend using the Windows Snipping Tool.
        • Alternatively to send a screenshot press Alt + PRINT SCREEN to take a screenshot of the selected window. Then go to Start--> Accessories--> Paint, and press CTRL + V to paste the image. Lastly, save it as a jpeg file and send the file as an attachment.

          Brandon,

Your image shows the MAX indicator in use on Ninjatrader. Good.
Your image shows that the MAX indicator is plotting the Maximum Close of n Bars.. Bad
In my mind, the MAX indicator should plot the Maximum High (in other words, the actual maximum Price) of n bars. This would be good.

Plot Close = Not MAX. Bad
Plot High = MAX = Good

Anyways, thanks Brandon. I am just going to use the Donchian Channel instead.
I just thought someone might be able to explain why the MAX did not plot the Maximum.

          All the best.

            Hello ScottW,

            Thanks for your notes.

The MAX indicator will plot the maximum Close of n bars.

To have the MAX indicator plot the maximum High of n bars, you could set the MAX indicator's 'Input series' property to High. By default it is set to Close.

            See the attached screenshot.

Nice job, Brandon. Well picked up.
I have never adjusted that drop down menu before.
I have learnt something new. Thanks again, Brandon.
