Ruler Drawing tool Object seems to disappear.

I just installed the latest version 8.1.1.6 64 bit. I am seeing Ruler objects disappear visually from the chart. I have a couple of Rulers on the chart and they are still in the Drawing Objects list. I am able to restore them visually if I select them and reload a template for them.

I have seen issue over the last 3 or 4 versions. Any help on this would be appreciated.

If this is not the correct forum subtopic please direct me to bugs and issues.

I'm not able to immediately reproduce this issue on my end, is there a certain step or function that causes the drawing object to disappear?

Well it is not something that seems to be easily identifiable. I was a mystery to me a first. It was frustrating because it continued happening and was not attributable to any particular reason. I do have a large number of Lines and text on the chart. On the order of 170+ objects if that means anything

I realize you may need more information to confirm it is actually happening(not that you may not believe me) I have attached an image from today. It is the MES 06-23 during today's session. I have tried to include enough information for you to see that "Ruler 69" is not being display. It is MediumSeaGreen and should have its data box up to the right.

Sorry the data box should be up to the left NOT the right. This "Ruler 69" is configured similarly to the RED Ruler but oppositely oriented.

I'm still unable to reproduce this, however I see in the screenshot the 'bars' display is 0 meaning it is a vertical line for the first two anchor points, is it possible it is lined up with another drawing object on the chart?

Does this issue persist on a new chart, or chart with fewer drawing objects?

If you draw a Ruler in future bars(displaced bars) you will see it has 0 (zero) bars while not being a vertical line. I am often drawing a Ruler with most of it set initially in future bars.

Does this only ever impact Rulers that you've drawn into the future or do you also see this with rulers that have both anchors on bars that already exist?

Do you have a step by step process for how this could reliably be reproduced so that I can test it more thoroughly on my end?

Hi Zackary,

I use the Ruler dynamically moving it around as needed. It usually starts out with an initial anchor in the near past and projects in to the future. the visual of the Ruler seems so random and unusual I can't give you a reproducible description. The ruler is always in the list of chart object and is usually able to re-display by reloading a template. Although at times it will not re-display. Then I have to delete it and recreate it.

I have removed other indicators using resources on that chart and it is still happening maybe less frequently. I thought perhaps it was resource related. Currently, I am running 4 charts 2 "ES 06-23" & 2 "MES -6-23" on a large 4K 43" screen (lots of pixels). The Utilization Monitor shows the highest resources in order going to Rays, Ruler, Fixed Text, Line, Text and other items to a much lesser degree.

I continue to use an indicator I wrote "PriceLine" with redraws 8 lines with each price change. This helps me focus my attention on the current price. And my prime indicator, I also wrote, that is responsible for drawing a large number individual lines Gann Fan style, Triangles, Text & FixedText on BarUpdate. I also have an "Order Profile Volume Profile" and a few other manually draw objects.​

Thank you for your post and for that information.

I will try and test to the best of my ability and see if I can reproduce in any way. If you could please also pay very close to attention to your actions as you work and try to see if there is a consistently reproducible scenario or specific sequence of things that occur when the rulers disappear, that would be immensely helpful. Once I have something I can reproduce, I can report this to Development.

Additionally, can you please also confirm that this issue occurs in Safe Mode as well?

Safe Mode will prevent NinjaTrader from:

• Loading workspaces.
• Connecting on start-up.
• Loading custom assemblies.
• Getting instrument updates from the server.

To enable safe mode, please use the following steps:

• Exit NinjaTrader.
• Hold the CONTROL key and double click the NinjaTrader icon.
• Keep the CONTROL key held down until you see the Control Center.
• You can verify you are in safe mode by going to Help -> About.

Once you have opened the platform in safe mode:

• Reconnect to your data provider from the 'Connections' menu
• Please open a new chart with no custom bar types/indicators/templates and test for issues with the Rulers.
  • Please note this will not delete your workspace however the new blank workspace will be named Untitled. If you have a workspace already named "Untitled," however, you will not want to save the workspace when exiting NinjaTrader, otherwise, it will overwrite it.

Safe mode activation? How with the new login? Hold down control key while logging in? There is the login after the initial click on Ninjatrader. Do safe mode instructions need an update?

Thank you for your reply.

On the new NinjaTrader Desktop, the instructions aren't much different. You simply hold down CTRL until the splash screen appears where you login. Once you see the login screen, you can release the CTRL button.

Ah, Ok very good. Not sure when I will be able to check that out.

This morning I did see unusual resources be used by Ruler. For a while it was the most resource intense object in the Monitor. I was not adjusting it at that time. Normally, I see that it doesn't use much as it is a static object. I had deleted all manually drawn objects on all charts but one. On that one I had only 2 Rulers. It seemed to be increasing by nearly 100 (ms) per price change. Very unusual! It seem to last for a few minutes 1-2 maybe. I am not seeing that at this time.

Last Friday 5/26/2023 during the normal daytime session I lost a Ruler about 3 times and once I had to recreate it. I captured a couple Monitor images. One with Ruler with very high usage and one with "normal" usage. For this normal one, I made no manual changes to the chart in any way. I allowed it to remained static except for real-time data coming in for a period of 20 minutes for comparison purposes. For reference: The chart I mostly focus on: Bar Type: Range 7, equivolume bars, Order Flow Volume Profile, and Indicators: MTGS9statsDev2x8, MTPriceLine5X. These indicators are responsible for the high usage Text, Ray, Line, Triangle, FixedText. MTPriceLine5x is set to Update on Price Change while MTGS9statsDv2x8 is set to UPdate on Bar Close. Rulers visually disappearing from this chart and this is the only chart I use Ruler on for the most part.


This one has Very High usage for Ruler



This is the Normal usage Ruler. The Chart was allowed to run with no manual input for 20 minutes. I really don't know what is causing the problem. I wanted to minimize changes that may affect it.
