Changed behaviour .27.1 direct entry on chart of Data Series

    Hello,
It used to be the case that the Data Series in a chart could be changed by typing whilst mouse over the chart panel i.e. want to change from 15m to 5m - simply type 5m hit return, or 10t hit return for 10tick. (didn't used to need m as this was Default but unified in 8, d, m, s, t etc suffixes required).

Not what I'm now seeing in 27.1
Can't quite figure out what is going on/wrong - for e.g. sometimes it behaves as used to, sometimes when I hit return it brings up the Data Series search box, the typed entry e.g. 15m is NOT in the search field which is empty, but the list of entries is the unfiltered database

2 steps - type 15m (no return) the search box shows 1 listing under All - 15m (green) Stock
= hit return, 15m disappears from the search field, I get the entire database listed with 15m (green) and Stock (and everything else)

But it is not consistent (although frequent) - I've just repeated several times to step-by-step here doing exactly the same thing. Once it worked and brought up the 15m or 5m as I switched, but more often it brought up the search box as per above

    Hello brucerobinson,

You can still type into a chart to change the data series, that has not changed. If you use custom items like indicators that could effect keyboard commands if the item is looking for keyboard input, it may block it.

Typing into a chart starts by typing the instrument name or timeframe amount, for example ES, the E will bring up the instrument selector. Return or Enter will not bring up the selector.

2 steps - type 15m (no return) the search box shows 1 listing under All - 15m (green) Stock
Typing just 15m without pressing return should not do anything besides bring up the search box with no instruments unless you have a 15m instrument.

= hit return, 15m disappears from the search field, I get the entire database listed with 15m (green) and Stock (and everything else)
Pressing return from that point will change to a 15 minute chart.
If you have an instrument defined as 15m that could cause a problem with the search box because you would navigate to the instrument 15m and not a 15 minute interval.

      Hello Jesse and thanks.
I believe in a roundabout fashion your last 2 lines are the answer to the info I gave above
"type 15m (no return) the search box shows 1 listing under All - 15m (green) Stock"
So, I have an instrument defined as ‘15m’, as a Stock. And, further search, I have same for ‘5m’ listed as a Stock. Looking at the properties of each they basically don’t have any data other than what will be defaults.
I have not deliberately/manually added either as an instrument to the Instrument List, and it is almost certainly the result of having typed 15m and 5m on the chart panel to change instrument interval - so under what circumstances is it possible that typing 15m or 5m on the chart panel can result in the addition of a new Stock, Symbol ‘15m’ to the Instrument List (so that I can avoid a repeat)? It seems that by some means, typing 15m or 5m can result in these being added as instruments to the Instrument database, by default as Stocks, and with no properties defined other than default, if any. I.e. creates a new instrument symbol 15m, 5m with no other properties because ‘that’s all I wrote’ - 15m and 5m was all I typed.
I have been using 8 and 7 before it. I have a very vague recollection of this cropping up before, I believe it was at the time of introduction of 8.

        Hello brucerobinson,

I am not aware of a specific way that may have happened, if you find a way to recreate a problem please feel free to post the steps here so that we can report it. To return the selector to normal you can delete those instruments using the instrument manager.

For completeness in case anyone encounters similar:
            - I identified it was occurring on some chart Windows, not on others
            - I tested a new chart Window, no template, no problem
            - I tested same with my template applied - no problem
            - I replaced the offending chart Windows
            No further problems
Most likely cause - migration from 8.0.26.0 to 27.1 over the weekend

Re: rogue entries in Instrument List - I located an entry for every one that had 'failed' on the chart - obvious because no Description and no content in the Instrument's data fields other than Default populating - 10s, 30s, 2m, 3m, 5m, 15m, 30m, 72T, 144T etc

So whatever is going on, causes an entry in the Instrument List database for whatever is typed on the chart (when it fails to bring up the Data Series)

This is true - if you go into the symbol dropdown on a chart and type "THISISNOTASYMBOL" and hit Enter it will display Loading... for a bit then fail. You then seem to have a THISISNOTASYMBOL stock type instrument added to the instrument list. I don't know if it used to do this but it is doing this now in 8.1.1.3. I take it that it didn't do this in the previous 8.0 version?

                Hello QuantKey_Bruce,

It is normal for what you described, that is the quick way to add new instruments.

                https://ninjatrader.com/support/help...e_database.htm

Equities can be alternatively added by typing the symbol name into an open chart or Market Analyzer and pressing the "Enter" key on your keyboard. Please see the "How to change a Data Series" section of the Working with Price Data page of the Help Guide for more information.

The timeframes exist as part of the instrument picker logic so it wouldn't be expected for those to get added as instruments. If there are specific steps you find which add the timeframes as instruments we can report that to development.

Changing and Adding Instruments and Intervals with the Keyboard
You can change instruments or intervals by pressing a letter or number key in a selected chart. When a letter or number key is pressed, the Instrument Overlay appears

I should say, that this is in .27.1 not 8.1. And I believe harks back as far as 7 to 8
