import existing data connections to new PC

I have a Lifetime NT8 License and it is installed on my Windows PC tower at my home where I trade

I am also setting up Ninjatrader 8 on a laptop that I am presently using while I travel.

How do I import the data connections to the NT8 on the laptop?
    - I imported a backup file and I can see the data connections in Config.xml, but the connections configured (same as other PC) do not have the credentials for the data connection. I have multiple data connections and I want to be able to do this with files each time I travel. I do not want to have to configure all of these connections manually.
    - Is there something else I need to do here?
    - are there files on the tower PC that I need to copy to the laptop?

Please answer quickly I am out of town

You need to manually reenter your login credentials because the backup file removes connection username/passwords when the machine ID is different. It's a protection in case someone get's your backup file, then they can't start trading your live accounts. Personally I like to keep my main trading on a vps so that the machine ID is always the same, and I just remotely connect to the vps from different computers when traveling.

However for you since you're not using a vps, then next time you travel, don't do the backup file, and instead just manually copy the workspaces folder for changes to your charts.

do you know what files the connections are contained in?

I don't think you can copy over the connections because they're not saved in plain text. My guess is it's encrypted, and uses the machine id to decrypt so that's why the connections username and passwords are blanked out when copying to a computer with a different machine id. If the computer had the same machine id, then the backup file would copy over the connections too with the username and password still saved. Try importing the backup file to the same computer that made it, and the connections are restored.

          Hello xiinteractive,

Connection data is not able to be transferred for security purposes, when a backup is restored to a different PC that information is wiped upon import. You need to re enter the connection information when using a new PC. This happens both for backup files and if you manually copy the user data folder, this is an intentional security measure when a new PC is detected.
