NinjaTrader 8.0.27.1 New Installation Backup Folder

When installing NinjaTrader 8.0.27.1 as a new installation (i.e. NinjaTrader has never been installed on the system previously), two folders are created in the "user directory" (i.e. Documents): "NinjaTrader 8" and "NinjaTrader Backup".

Prior to 8.0.27.x (i.e. 8.0.26.x and earlier), the two folders created were "NinjaTrader 8" and "NinjaTrader 8 Backup".

Given the change in created folders in 8.0.27.x, one would expect exporting a backup in 8.0.27.x should create the backup file in the folder called "NinjaTrader Backup". It does not. In fact, it is not possible to determine if any backup file is created, and if so, where that backup file is created.

However, creating a new additional folder manually called "NinjaTrader 8 Backup" fixes the problem, and exported backups go there.

    So, there are two possibilities:
. Either the backup folder is created with the wrong name (missing "8 ") ... or ...
. The program still uses the prior folder name (with the "8 ") and does not use the new folder name created for backups

Either way, a fix is required.

    Thanks.

    Good catch.

In addition, the folder 'NinjaTrader Backup' may already exist,
because that folder is already in use as NT7's backup folder.

Thanks, bltdavid. Quite true. In the case where it became obvious, it was a new system that had never seen either NinjaTrader 7 or 8.

Since I have both 7 and 8 on my system, I'm wondering if the issue came with 8.0.27.x or if it might have been there earlier. The only technically "never before" installation I've tried is with 8.0.27.1. It's possible it came in before 8.0.27.x ... ... but ultimately, it's largely academic. The bug is there now. Needs a fix.

      Thanks.

        Hello jeronymite and bltdavid,

Thank you very much for reporting this to us, I was able to confirm that NinjaTrader 8.0.27.0 and beyond still looks for the "NinjaTrader 8 Backup" folder in some cases, even though it should be looking for "NinjaTrader Backup" at this time.

I've reported this to our development team to have this corrected in our upcoming release.

Thank you again for reporting this!

I think NT8 should maintain its backup folder as 'NinjaTrader 8 Backup'.

To drop the '8' seems like an extremely poor decision.

          What's wrong with consistency?

bltdavid Yes! Exactly. It is architecturally inconsistent to remove the "8 ". It also means NT7 and NT8 would share the same backup folder, which is not sensible, despite having a small difference in backup filenames. Keeping the "8 " is really the most appropriate approach. If one can assume that eventually there will be a NinjaTrader 9 (or some other relevant distinct name), that backup folder should really have a name aligned with that distinct application name also.

            Thanks.

              Good points well made.
Putting myself at risk of being (wrongly) accused of demeaning Ninjatrader staff here but this type of thing (inconsistency, carelessness, whatever) is not exactly rocket science, it happens continually and wastes our time.
It is in principle the same issue, albeit at a far ‘simpler’ level, as relocation of the program installation and Documents directory locations from x86 - poorly thought through, implications re: legacy installations etc.
I was considering taking some time over the holiday weekend moving from 26.0 until I saw this. jeronymite thanks for posting, saved me the frustration & aggravation.
I guess I’ll just keep lurking on here a while yet and at least 27.2

It would seem that NT 8.1.1.1 has resolved this issue by creating backups in the NinjaTrader Backup (not "8") folder. A resolution is good to see, and it seems to align with the move to "NinjaTrader Desktop" as branding.

However, this issue of the wrong filename is still needing to be fixed: https://forum.ninjatrader.com/forum/...-database-file

                Thanks.
