Moving NT8 to a new computer - can I move everything? incl custom?

I emailed support over 24 hours ago and haven't heard back, so we'll try here.

I had to move my NT8 to a new computer. Followed the steps provided. Boot up NT8 on new computer and none of my settings or custom indicators are there. Is there some way to move EVERYTHING to a new machine? If not, why not?

How do I copy all custom indicators from machine 1 to machine 2?

    Hello brownsfan019,

    Thank you for your post!

I've provided instructions below on how to create a backup of your installation and restore it to the second computer.

Please note that the following list is the items you can choose to include or exclude from your backup (Configuration files, Database, Historical Chart Data, Log and Trace files, Market Replay Data, NinjaScript Files, Templates, Workspaces). Many users exclude the historical chart data, log and trace files, and Market Replay data to reduce the file size.

Follow these steps to create a backup file and import it to the new computer:
    • Open NinjaTrader 8 on the computer you wish to backup from and disconnect from any open connections if applicable.
    • Go to Tools > Export > Backup File
    • Select which items you would like to backup and click 'Export'
    • Email the file to yourself or Save the file to an external storage device. The file can be found in the Documents\NinjaTrader 8 Backup folder on your PC.

Open NinjaTrader 8 on the computer you wish to restore to and disconnect from any open connections.
    • Open the email with the backup file or connect the external storage and save the backup file to a destination of your choosing (I recommend the desktop as it is easy to find).
    • Go to Tools > Import > Backup File...
    • Select the backup file you created from the location you saved it

The new computer will have a different Machine ID and will result in any passwords for account connections being removed along with the NinjaTrader License key being removed. For security purposes, all account connections will need to have the username and password re-entered via Connections > configure. You will also need to enter your License key into Help > License key.

You will also need to contact any 3rd party vendors and let them know that your machine ID has changed. You can locate the new machine ID by the following:
    • Control Center > Help > About

I have also provided a link to our help guide with more information on backup and restore below if needed:Please let us know if we may provide further assistance!

        Hello brownsfan019,

Yes, when you create the backup file you can choose what you want to include or exclude from your backup. As long as you follow all steps above, what you choose to put in your backup file should transfer over to the second computer.

Please let me know if further assistance is needed.

According to support through email, custom indicators do not transfer over.

What is the point of having a backup process if it doesn't actually back up your full layout?

            Hello brownsfan019,

If you choose to include your NinjaScript Files within your backup file, they should transfer over. The following list is the items you can choose to include or exclude from your backup: (Configuration files, Database, Historical Chart Data, Log and Trace files, Market Replay Data, NinjaScript Files, Templates, Workspaces). • Control Center > Help > About
I would recommend trying my detailed method above and letting me know if you were able to transfer the NinjaScript files or not.

Please let me know if further assistance is needed.

Thanks - I will try to move it again w/ your method.

Question - if that doesn't work, how do I get my custom indicators from computer Home to #2? I don't want to install them from the initial file, I want to take the current config of the indicators and then move those. I emailed support and asked how to do this, but they've chosen to ignore my question.

              thanks

                Hello brownsfan019,

Yes, I would highly recommend moving your NinjaScript files via the backup and restore method above, it should transfer over the indicators seamlessly. I have had several clients successfully transfer NinjaScript files between computers this way.

If you find that the indicators did not transfer via the backup and restore, please let me know and I can send further instruction!
