How to rollover contracts on a trade?

    Hey,

If I were to place a trade on GC and I expect to hold it until let's say September 2023, how would I go about doing so?

Can I enter on the current August 2022 contracts, and keep rolling them over prior to expiration every few months until September 2023?

Also, how do I roll over my contacts while I'm in a position. Am I supposed to close the position before expiry and then enter on the further out contracts after?

    Thanks,

    Tony

    Hello Tony,

You can think of different contract months as basically trading a different instrument. You can have a position in both contract months at the same time, or be short on one contract month and long on the other.

Positions do not automatically roll. You would need to enter a position on the new contract month, and then close the position on the existing contract month.

Yes, you will want to close the position on the soon to expire contract month before the last trading day.

So there is no way to roll a position from one contract to another?
Every other brokerage has this ability, but NinjaTrader does not?

          Hello priceaction,

          Welcome to the NinjaTrader forums!

NinjaTrader does not provide the functionality automatically roll future positions.

That said, it would be possible to create an addon that can achieve this functionality. (loop through account positions,

I thought I just saw a new 'Roll Positions' function in the Release Notes for v27.0
I didn't read it with too much interest as I Day Trade, rather general curiosity - but I got the impression that that was what it is for - albeit I also don't recall details of whether it was 'continuously automatic' from Contract to Contract or just current to next at the time selected.
Or am I losing the plot.....

              Hello,

This actually is correct. Reviewing the release notes I am seeing 14350: 'Added ability to roll positions from Control Center position grid'. This would be a new feature added by popular demand feature requests.

Note, the position has to be rolled individually.
