    Forex-TickSize

    Hello,

for having updowntick in volumetric chart plotting I have changed the ticksize of forex instruments by reducing eg from 0,001 to 0,01. Then its plotting ok for some instruments, but some instruments show strange numbers or even do not move.

Please see attached a screenshot with AUDJPY showing correct price in a range chart and in volumetric chart and also plotting ok the updowntick.
In the screenshot with EURUSD there are strange prices in the 30 min chart and the volumetric chart and it doesnt move as well.

Screenshot FX_EU_ticksize shows how volumetric looks with default ticksize. This makes no sense.

    (data fx is fxcm)

    Thank you!

    Hello Tony,

Thank you very much for your post.

I can confirm that, when changing the tick size on a Forex instrument (e.g. from 0.00001 to 0.001), some of the charts are charting incorrect/strange prices.

In general, we always advise keeping the default tick size selected, as different exchanges report prices differently, which could indeed lead to incorrectly drawn charts.

Could you let us know what the expected outcome would be, or what you attempt to chart?

Please also know; to assist you more effectively, it is usually easier to contact us via platformsupport (at) ninjatrader (dot) com, as the forum's capability of posting screenshots or submitting files is greatly limited.

I look forward to your reply!

      Hello,

thank you for your reply. I simply want to 1,1913 instead of 1,19128 (ticksize 0.0001 instead of 0.00001 from my understanding). Because then it is plotting ok in volumetric updowntick.

Now it is plotting ok for EURJPY, GBPJPY, AUDJPY, CADJPY, GBPCHF, AUDCHF and AUDUSD (0.0001 !). But not for EURUSD and GBPUSD. And with ticksize 0.00001 for EURUSD and GBPUSD there are plotted in between always rows showing "0" in volumetric.

      Thank you!
      Tony

        Hello Tony,

Thank you very much for the clarification.

        To first explain why the issue of zero-values occurs in the first place;

As Forex instruments are traded with gaps that are generally larger than other instruments, it is quite possible that several pips are skipped and a trade executes at a value further above or below other trades. As Forex instruments furthermore have no centralized exchange, these values can differ greatly.

This then causes the volumetric chart to appear longer than it would be for a different instrument, including several "zero volume" price points:

While lowering the tick size can remove these 'empty' lines, it also changes the fundamental way this instrument is built and its data is charted.

As the tick size is information directly supplied by your data provider, we don't recommend changing this value, as it can affect the received data. If this value is modified, it can cause incorrect pricing information, often only with specific instruments or indicators that rely on this information being correct.

As an alternative to lowering the tick size, would raising the "Ticks per level" setting of the volumetric chart work in your case?

If this is set to a higher value, e.g. 10, it would combine several ticks into one line, e.g. in the example below, where "Ticks per level" was changed from 1 to 10:

I look forward to your reply!

          Hello,

thank you for your reply and this solution. I do not recall now what forex instruments I changed the ticksize. Does it work with reset instruments to set all on default? Is there to do something before or after reset instruments please?

          Thank you!

            Hello Tony,

Thank you very much for your reply.

An instrument reset would indeed reset all values, including e.g. rollover dates, symbol mappings at different datafeed providers, and tick-size.

The only additional step you'd have to perform is to right-click the chart and "Reload all historical data", to ensure the old data is overwritten.

Should you run into any issues, don't hesitate to let us know!

                Hello tonynt,

                Thank you for your note.

In order to reset your instruments on NinjaTrader 8 follow the steps below.

To reset your instruments, please take the steps below.
                1. First, disconnect from any data providers by navigating to the Control Center > Connections menu, and left-click on “disconnect” that appears to the right when hovering your mouse over any active connection
                2. Next, reset your instruments by navigating to the Control Center > Tools > Database Management
                3. In the Database Management window, under the “Update instruments” section, ensure that “General properties”and “Symbol mappings” options are checked and then click Update
                4. Lastly, restart NinjaTrader for the changes to occur
