I don't really understand the purpose of hedging with the same instrument. And futures don't have any special tax benefits for longer holding periods.

In some cases, it's to preserve the trading record - more of an accounting exercise. For instance, both a long-term long trade and a short-term short trade might be "right" and a winning trade, yet, they might overlap.Originally posted by backtester831 View PostComment
