Gmail - Share Services setup gives syntax error (NT8)

    Hi,
I'm trying to setup an alert with action to send me an email.
I have been going through the forum and googled, but am not able to solve the error message I am receiving in the NT log. This occurs when I try to send a test email (from the setup screen).

The error message using port 587:
There was an error sending a mail message: The SMTP server requires a secure connection or the client was not authenticated. The server response was: 5.7.0 Authentication Required. Learn more at

The error message using port 465 (as this seems to be the correct port with SSL):
There was an error sending a mail message: Syntax error, command unrecognized. The server response was:

This Google account doesn't have 2-step-verification, so I understood that I wouldn't need to create an app password.

Could you please have a look at this and guide me through the process?

    Thank you in advance
    Dennis

The pre-configured settings for Gmail work in general, so I suspect your specific Google account settings need to be adjusted. If you enable 'Less secure apps', does this symptom persist? Here is a link with more information about how to adjust this Google account property:

Starting January 2025, less secure apps, third-party apps, or devices that have you sign in with only your username and password will no longer be supported for Google Workspace accounts. For exact

      Hi Patrick,
Thanks for getting back so fast. I indeed changed that setting already, but forgot to mention it in my initial post... Unfortunately the symptom persists.
      Thanks

Can you clarify which error persists in the log? To clarify, port 587 should be used. I've tested on my end and have the following for my Gmail account:
        • 2-step verification off
        • app passwords off
        • 'Less secure apps access' on
        Here are my settings:

Thanks. I checked my Google account settings and these are same as yours (off - off - on).
Also the settings in NT8 are the same (I now removed the 'From name'). With port 587 the error remains:
There was an error sending a mail message: The SMTP server requires a secure connection or the client was not authenticated. The server response was: 5.7.0 Authentication Required. Learn more at

The authentication message is likely coming from the Google account. Please log out of your Google account and log back in to confirm that you have the correct password entered.

The password for the Gmail account may need to be changed to be a stronger password or POP may need to be enabled on the Gmail account or the password was entered incorrectly. See the following post for more information:

Thanks again. I checked the link you have send.
I already checked the correctness of my password before. The password was already strong, but I renewed it and ensured that for Google it is also strong (not sure if it was strong before). I enabled POP in the account settings. These didn't solve the error.

Then, I see that the 'Less secure apps access' was off again. When I changed this setting this afternoon, I noticed a note from Google, where they say it will be turned off automatically if you don't use (what is the definition on that timeline, Google???). I switched it on again, and I finally received the test email. Yaayyyyyy

So, let's assume my issue is solved,
              Thanks for your help!!
