    Instrument specific settings

    Hi

I have a general set-up where with a set of "standard" charts for all futures I trade. Needless to say however, you need to tweak some of the settings to optimize them for the individual futures. For example, optimal volume factors will vary significantly from one future to another. One indicator I like in the order flow package is the "order flow detector". To make this a useful indicator however, you cannot use the same volume settings across the board. But how do you (can you?) set the parameters such that they are specific to the underlying assets? It is possible on a other platforms that I use, but I haven't figured out how to do this in a smart way on NT8. Is there any way this can be accomplished short of running individual charts for every single asset?

    Many thanks.

It is not possible to associate indicator settings to a specific instrument, however, what you're describing is possible through the functionality of chart templates.

For example, you would set up an ES chart and configure your indicator(s) as needed for the ES specifically. You would then save this as a chart template. Now, when opening a new chart (or on an existing chart) you could apply this chart template you created so that the settings are applied.

The following help guide page goes into further detail about how to use chart templates to apply specific settings to your chart windows:

If your goal is to use one chart window with one tab, you'll need to switch chart templates each time you switch instruments.

      Thanks for your quick reply.

The chart template does not do the trick for me unfortunately. The idea is that you switch between charts and that the settings that go with the specific security are also loaded automatically. I'm afraid that having to load a template every time is too cumbersome and disrupts the work flow. The parallell I would make is that when you open a new chart you want the trendlines for that underlying to automatically load, without having to load a template.

May I please ask you to add this feature? Like I said, it does exist on other platforms and I know that this is something many people use.

      Thanks again.

I'll submit a feature request to the Development Team. I'll edit this post when I have a tracking number. EDIT - the tracking number is SFT-3260.

In the meantime, there are a few ways to work around this:
        • Load 1 chart window with multiple chart tabs. You can then cycle through the tabs.
        • Load multiple workspaces. 1 workspace for each instrument which you can then cycle through.

If you choose to use one of these work-arounds, be sure to remember that having multiple tabs and/or multiple workspaces will be more resource-intensive. Here is the help guide page which provides information and tips regarding performance:
