What's the proper way to upgrade NT8 to the latest version?

I've done two upgrades in the last year to the latest version and neither went smoothly.

I'm on Windows 10 with the latest updates. No antivirus other than Windows Defender which is probably configured to not scan the NT8 folder.

This time the install failed halfway through and did a rollback (at the 'deleting files' step, I think). Then NT wouldn't run.

Luckily, the installer succeeded on the 2nd attempt after a machine restart.

Then I got several errors when I started it up (but it did start up!). The errors eventually went away after some compiling and restarts.

Is there a recommended approach that might help things go more smoothly?

No problems here. Just download the installer and run.


might want to run check disk/Scan disk in your drive and check for errors.

Hi Steve, thanks for your post.

Normally all that is needed is to run the latest installer. It might be a very specific environment issue you are seeing. You can test with a new user folder: Rename the "NinjaTrader 8" folder in your Documents to "NinjaTrader 8DEV" then run the installer. A new NT8 folder will be created. If you get no issues in the clean folder then there are some problems with your user folder, some custom addition that is causing the issue with upgrading.

Thanks. It's good to have the confirmation that just running the installer is how it's supposed to work.

I do a lot of work in the "NinjaTrader 8/bin" folder and the Custom project. It wouldn't surprise me if there's something the installer wasn't expecting or maybe a locked file.

Next time I'll try doing the install after a reboot just to make sure all apps are closed and there are no unexpected processes or locked files.
