    Monitor advice

    Hello,

I am currently running multiple 23" widescreen monitors. Whilst I am adding a few more, I want more screen space per monitor, not just to scale up in size. So, to clarify, when changing my monitors to get larger 28" ones (or I have also been considering 1 very large curved one per 2 existing), I don't just want the same thing bigger. I am hoping that with higher resolution / dpi, I can fit more information in a bigger space. This is to get more bars on the chart, etc.

    I hope this makes sense.

Ninja trader support, given I read recently that 4k monitors etc. are not officially supported, nor tested, is there any advice / guidance you can provide?

Given the cost of acquiring the hardware is pretty significant, I want to ensure I have something that will both work with Ninja trader and fill my requirement.

If anyone has some tried and tested monitors running in high resolution, if you could contribute what monitor and your graphics card, that might be most useful to me (and others) in confirming something that works well.

    Much appreciate any feedback.

    P

HD is defined as 1280 x 720 resolution with a more common adaptation to Full High Definiton (FHD) at 1920 x 1080 resolution. These resolutions are supported. Here is a handy publicly available article I found that goes into detail about resolutions:

What we do not officially support at this time is 4K (or higher) resolutions. We have plans for full 4K resolution support in the future, but I do not have any estimate on when that may be.

Thanks - My apologies (late here). I did in fact mean 4k. I have 'hd' now. I will amend the original post to prevent confusion...

I use nt7 and nt8 on 4k laptop monitors. Scaling in Windows 7 is a little tough, but windows 10 is much better of course.

also have u3011 and u3415w dells attached.

crosshairs were a problem in nt8 on high resolution, especially global and full screen charts, but should be ok now?

I'm not sure with curved monitors if drawing lines is a real or imagined problem. Can't say I've done it.

If you want the same pixel density as the 23 inchers get a 4k that's greater 46 inches. That would give you the same feel as 2x2 23 inch screens. Preferably curved because the seeing the extreme edges become an issue. You can set Windows not to scale so NT8 remains compatible. I use this pixel calculator to calculate the specs https://www.pxcalc.com/

Here is a great DPI PPI calculator for monitors with square pixels....

yeah, I do what you're thinking of, for the same reasons - greater resolution = more info in same square inches. Replies you've got already cover it. Pixel density is what it's about.

You asked for real world experience -
I use four 43" 4k TVs (far and away best bang per buck per pixel & sq. in. compared with PC monitors), use active (need to get ones that support full 4k or you'll lose refresh rate, look it up) mini Dataport to HDMI converters, and an NVIDIA Quadro 4 x miniDP card (can't recall model & away atm, maybe K620. Anyhow there's only one that has 4 miniDP outputs supporting 4k at 60Hz - there's one that does 8x4k but at 30Hz. If you want 8 x 4k use 2x 4 miniDP cards).
As mentioned, Win10 makes a good fist of dealing with scaling issues for text size etc.
As mentioned, DPI is what it's all about. The DPI on my 4x 4k x 43" is exactly the same as on a 26" QHD I also have hooked up to another NVIDIA card, which I use for Ninja Control Center, Trade Performance windows etc. Point being seamless uniformity of appearance and operational use across everything, no p**sing about with 'issues'.
As mentioned, Global Crosshairs can pause when markets get a bit tasty. But not much and not for long even with a gazillion charts open refreshing a 100ms (rather than Ninja's MIND-BLOWINGLY STUPID AND STUBBORN 250ms, there's no difference whether 100 or 250ms in this regard - hehe, respect, Hurleydood).

With the NVIDIA cards you get (professional) software for Windows Desktop Management thrown in. Gives you snap-to-grid, duplicate Window to a different Workspace or a specific monitor - makes setting up your new Ninja Workspaces for your new monitor configuration a doddle/overcomes the Windows and Ninja shortcomings in this regard. The Quadro cards are a bit pricey on face value but they're professional spec and it shows in use, they just work, flawlessly in every aspect of what they're built to do, hardware and software. They're also quiet. You'll also see them readily available as overstock etc at good prices.

I use the screens in portrait mode and have them physically arranged in a bit of an arc (curve). Not as sexy as curved screens but works well enough. I'd probably go for 6x 4k 43" in landscape mode two high three wide if I were starting over, 2 screens directly in front on on top of the other and 2 each side slightly angled to give me 'surround vision', but I'm not (starting over :-)

As an aside, if you use more than one PC (I use an additional one for all 'non-trading platform' stuff - browser for economic calendar, email, back-up copy of Ninja for emergencies etc to keep my trading PC environment 'clean', you might want to look at Mouse Without Borders software if you don't have already. It's basically a software KVM Switch so that I just use one mouse and keyboard across everything. Makes moving around your new acres of screen real-estate much easier, & can vouch for it on my setup. Used it for several years without issues. Works across ore thanone PC on the same LAN and as many screens as you like. It's a Microsoft Garage project.

The above is just one way to go, or curved 49 inchers, or whatever. Just giving you an example and confirmation it works in practice, and well.

                  Best,

Already have the nvidia card + mouse without borders as a link to my laptop/emergency backup. Works brilliantly. I really do appreciate the real world reports. All the best.
