my december 2017 nasdaq index futures chart [symbol = NQ] is five years of daily bars. are the bars for five years ago real actual bars [i.e.] was the future for december 2017 trading five years ago?

These daily bars are generating using merged historical data, meaning it is a daily bar of the active contract at that time, not specifically the 12-17 contract throughout. The first trading day of a NQ contract is usually around 15 month before expiration.

If you wish to change the merge policy, you can go to Tools>Options>Market Data and change the merge policy to 'do not merge'.
