How to determine number of bars ago in an indicator?

I want to build an indicator to plot average range of (x) bars ago. And I want to be able to change (x) from the UI. What method do I use to determine (x)?

To create a user definable input so that you can set a paramter in the UI upon applying the strategy/indicator, the following reference goes over how to do that.

I would also suggest seeing the SMA indicator preloaded with NinjaTrader for an additional example.
