Find out the start/end date of an instrument in my database?

To find out the start/end date of an instrument in my database, I can open the “Historical Data” window and look.
It seems to me that the name of the "ncd" files in the DB folder always (?) matches the values in this window.
Then I could use win32 functions and string manipulation to get that date via code.
But, isn't there a better way to do this? A sure way? A NT function perhaps?
What does the community and support suggest?

Can you explain what you mean by start/end date of an instrument?

Do you mean the expiry? Or just what the earliest and latest historical data you have downloaded for the instrument is?

There is no supported/documented function in NinjaScript to obtain this.
