    import made-up files

    Hello,

    How do i import a made-up file?
I would like to use ninjatrader chart to display a bunch of data.
Something simple like numbers 10, 8, 5, 7, 23 ... no hours needed just vertical fake prices.
Can we create an instrument like ES 06-23 for example and modify it to become fakenumber.last and put numbers in the files and import into a chart?

    Thank you

    Hello frankduc,

You could do that, the data would need to be in a format like the ones shown in the historical data import page:

If you wanted to display data that is not in that format you could write an indicator to read the file and then plot the data.

      Jesse,

I created that file LQ. How do i insert the file and find the file?
In historical import format i kept the settings as default. It says 0 data records sucessfully imported

How do i open a chart of my file? Do i have to create it in instrument list?

      TY

        Hello frankduc,

You need to follow the directions on the historical data import page, the file name is important and tells the import what type of data is being imported. You would also need to create a custom instrument to use that data. You will get errors when opening charts for a fake instrument if you are connected to a data provider because it won't be able to request live or historical data for it.

        File Name
When using the NinjaTrader format, the name of the text file to be imported must be the NinjaTrader instrument name followed by a period and "Last", "Bid", or "Ask" depending on the data type. For example:
MSFT.Last.txt for Microsoft stock last price data

ES 12-09.Bid.txt for the S&P E-mini December contract bid price data

EURUSD.Ask.txt for the Euro/U.S. dollar currency pair ask price data

          Hello again,

Is there a way to open a chart without an instrument?
Select nothing or something that could create a chart with no data, just to create lines and numbers in vertical and horizontal axis?

          TY

            Hello frankduc,

A chart needs a series to work, there is not a way to display something on a chart without using an instrument.
