Anyone written a successful strategy

A friend of mine who has been in the game for a long time says he doesn't know of anyone who has consistently made money using a strategy. Can anyone chime in to indicate (no pun intended) otherwise? I am a professional programmer (30+ years) with little trading experience. Strats seem like a logical thing to do. However, I'd feel better knowing others have made a good go of it!
