Trend strength

Does anyone have any suggestion to another indicator other than ADX (free or purchased) that helps in an automated strategy differentiate between strong trend and a choppy market conditions?
I am trying to develope an automated strategy, and in part incorporate an indicator that indicate trend strength to hop onto strong trends, and stay out of trading when the trend is weak, which indicates choppy market.
I tried to use the ADX, but that has not yielded the results I was expecting.

I have looked at the various vendors. I did not see any indicator that specifically addresses trend strength. Many have trend indicator (meaning letting me know whether the market is bearish or bullish), but I am looking for something that will let me know how strong is the trend.
