Strategy that references indicator problem

I have a Strategy that references a couple of variables from an indicator. I am having trouble getting the indicator to look at a different index or instrument than what my strategy is trading. For example I want my indicator to reference the $TICK while my strategy trades the SPY.

I tried the following after Initialize () in my indicator but only got errors.

Add("$TICK", PeriodType.Minute, 15);

How can I go about this? Thanks in advance.
