How to plot variable from strategy

I appreciate any input on my C# noob questions:

I wish to plot a strategy variable, either in a separate pane or overlaid on an existing indicator pane. Can this be done in the strategy, or do I have to create an indicator? I prefer to do it in the strategy if possible, but if it can only be accomplished via creating an indicator, how can I pass the variable from strategy to indicator?
