What is Look back period for

there is a sentence: The look back period sets the number of bars to look back to check for the cross over condition.

I understand the sentece itself, but dont understand the meaning. Can somebody tell me an example, when does it have to be used?

Thant means that function (method) will return "true" if crossover happened within last n bars, where n equals look back period; othervise it will return false.

For more clarity, the crossover can happen any time within the lookback period to be considered true.
