When in 2009 is NT7 expected? Re: Memory footprint

    Quote from NinjaTrader Ray:
"We wil be improving the memory footprint with NT7 due out in 09, but for now, you will have to see where you hit the wall."
    ------------------------

I'm wondering when the anticipated improvements to the memory footprint will be available that Ray mentioned would be included in NT7. 1Q09? 1H09? Later than that?

The beta is slotted end of this year/early 09.

      Josh,
Whatever can be done to reduce the memory footprint will be greatly appreciated. I've never seen an application use more virtual memory.

      Thank you for the info.

We are on it for NT7. Thanks for voicing your concern.

WOW, over 400mb RAM used for 4 charts!

From what I understand, there should be noticeable gains simply by switching to .NET 3.x without changing a single line code. Combined with any other optimizations, NT7 should (hopefully) be much faster...

I never really paid attention to NT's ram usage before.

Here's a comparison between NinjaTrader running ONE chart, MetaTrader4 with multiple charts and more indicators during a backtest, explorer with 8 windows open, and Firefox 3 with 20 windows open.

              Elliott Wave,
Yes, it's a big concern of mine. I'm torn b/t using NT and OpenQuant after suffering under TradeStation for a year of live trading.

There's a lot to like about NT but the memory issue may force me to OpenQuant, at least as a backup. That's why I'm hedging my bets this time around by being prepared to run both platforms.

I haven't made a fair comparison just yet but I think OpenQuant is using far less than 1/2 the memory that NT is using for similar processes. FWIW, depending on the futures contract, I can require several weeks of tick data to run my trading algorithms. Given the memory issues with NT, I doubt I'll be able to run my strategy on more than 5-10 instruments simultaneously.

I'd suggest getting more RAM and using NT

I have 2GB of RAM, and although thats enough for NinjaTrader, I also like to use my computer for other RAM intensive applications like VSTi's/sample libraries and having NT take a quarter of my RAM to display a chart is a real bummer...

Assuming NT7 takes full advantage of WPF this should help things, and I'm sure the developers will do everything they can in this area.

                  E.W.,
I was told on another post here that Windows only allows 2GB per application. I have 6GB RAM. If you know of a way to allocate more RAM to an app then please let me know.

Also, I read on the NT forum today that NT strategies post fills that are different from your actual account activity. That was a real mess in TradeStation and renders strategies to be nothing more than near-worthless MS Office-type macros that happen to have an order message attached.

Completely inaccurate. NT strategies in real-time post the actual fills from strategy generated orders NOT virtual fills based on the backtest engine.

                      Ray,
I apologize for the mistake. I've removed that portion of my post. After re-reading a post you made to Elliott Wave on 5/20 I now realize that you and E.W. were referring to simulation mode, not real-time trading.
