Trend vs. Trading Range indicator?

Is it possible to plot on a daily/hour chart an indicator that would show trending vs. range bound days? Or count of trending vs. range bound days?

You would need a custom indicator to do this. If you do not know NinjaScript or do not have the time a 3rd party consultant could develop this for you.

How do you determine which is which?
What do the terms mean descriptively?

I personally use general Dow Theory on a small period (5 or 8) SMA.

Higher lows and higher highs means it's a bull trend.

Lower lows and lower highs means it's a bear trend.

Higher lows and lower highs means it's consolidating.

Lower lows and higher highs means were entering/extending a trading range.

Higher highs etc, on each "bar to next bar" measurement, or on swing measurement? If on swing measurements, what are the parameters to determine a valid swing?
