Open Interest

Hello, Could someone tell me if there is a way i can view open interest data for futures contracts, ideally plotted in a similar way you can with conventional volume?

Hi Ray,
for futures traders open interest is important, maybe not as much as volume but it is. It brings new view on market situation. Every other program I know does have this feature.
Maybe it is not easy to handle open interest with real time data - as it is not presented by commodity exchanges in real time. Anyway this feature will be helpfull maybe as a plugin to backtest...

This is one of the major flaws of NinjaTrader, a huge oversight in my opinion, especially considering that all competing products support open interest.

The lack of support for open interest has significant impacts:

• No support for futures data subscriptions (such as Pinnacle data) because all such data services include open interest, and NinjaTrader refuses to read it. I'm paying for this data, I'd like to use it with my trading software.
• All my trading strategies that rely on open interest cannot be used. And I have several.
• No possibility of ever using indicators such as the Herrick Payoff Index in my trading.

NinjaTrader should be able to read in any data that the user defines. Whether that's open interest, advancing and declining issues, or whatever, there needs to be a way to take in a stream of non-price data and use it. This is already done with volume, so why not anything else?

I'd say open interest is more important than volume. Volume isn't nearly as meaningful for futures as it is for stocks and indices. Open interest, especially breakdowns given in the Commitment of Traders reports, has been far more useful to me.
