Chart overlay setting

What exactly does the overlay setting show? I understand that i can plot multiple data series in the same panel and they are overlay. But how is the scaling for overlay calculated? If you plot CL and BRN and select overlay for one of them, you will notice that BRN tends to criss-cross CL. Is that percentage gains? In other words, is overlay setting calculating percentage gains for the data series?

There would not be a scaling calculation for the overlay setting. This setting simply plots two data series on the same Y-axis.
