Importing and using imported data

I found posts on how to import market data, but there are no posts on how to use the imported market data. Note that I'm not talking about Stream-Readers to read data into a script. I'm talking about importing market data so that it is available for use to create a chart and apply a strategy, just as if it came from the exchange.

So I went to this page:

And based on that I "imported" my data. It said, "Successfully imported data". Then I said, ok so how do I associate that data with a symbol? I don't even know where it put the data in the first place as it didn't ask for a symbol, or did it just overwrite other historical data being used by the same symbol? That would be pretty useless as the reason you import data is to compare and contrast with existing data.

So can you help me understand how to use my imported data? I checked "Generate minute bars from imported tick data" so I could create a 60 minute chart from my tick data.

If there was data already for the same dates and times, yes it would overwrite it. If you want to import it to compare you would create a new instrument and re-name the file to import as that new instrument name. To create a new instrument please go to Tools > Instrument Manager > New.
