Managing charts and workspaces - basic newb questions

I'm a NT newbie. Any tips on managing charts for multiple timeframes for one instrument?

For example, I have a workspace with a daily chart for XYZ. I've marked up that chart with various trendlines, Fibonacci levels, etc. If I want to do the same on a weekly timeframe, I can switch the timeframe of the chart, but all those markups still show, which creates too much clutter to see the weekly chart well.

Assuming I wish to keep my daily chart marked up, but want a clean weekly chart so I can mark up with 'weekly' drawing tools, is the best option adding another chart in the same workspace? Is that how NT users typically manage multiple timeframes for one instrument?

Do you then use different workspaces for each instrument?

Does keeping multiple timeframe charts for one instrument increase memory usage dramatically over switching timeframes in one chart? Related to that, does having a lot of workspaces have a significant impact on memory usage, or is memory usage more a function of how much you have in the one workspace that is open at any one time?

Thank you for your forum post.


In regards to having a daily and a weekly chart with drawing objects, I would suggest to create two separate charts, one on a daily interval and the other on a weekly interval.


Other uses may want to chime in on this topic and offer more suggestions.


I have seen many users create separate workspaces per instrument. You can swap between these open workspaces quickly in NinjaTrader by pressing SHIFT + F3 on your keyboard.


I would not expect there to be much of a difference in the memory usage when creating a single multi-series chart as opposed to multiple single data series charts. Creating separate charts will take more memory usually due to the additional windows required.


You can experience unresponsive behavior in NinjaTrader if you have many charts, indicators and other windows opened depending on market volatility as well.


The 'Calculate on bar close' setting for indicators is important. If set to False, the indicator will be calculated on each incoming tick. During high volatility this can be very CPU intensive especially if the indicator makes complicated calculations. Please set it to True in the Indicator menu and the indicator will only be calculated at the end of each price bar.


If you have workspaces opened in the background which you do not use, we suggest to close such workspaces. Please go to Control Center-->File-->Workspaces and check what workspaces are listed below 'Save Workspace As'. The workspace with the check mark is the workspace opened on your monitor. Any additional workspaces listed, are opened in the background.


Please select a workspace without the checkmark. Subsequently, go to Control Center-->File-->Workspaces-->Close Workspace. Repeat this procedure until only 1 workspace is opened.
