Ninja Trader fails to connect to IB-TWS

    Ninja Trader fails to connect to IB-TWS

    I am not able to connect Ninja Trader to IB via TWS. This is a first time connection. It has never worked.

    TWS works fine by itself. I am using TWS Build 944.3 and Java Version 1.7.0 65
    Ninja Trader works fine by itself. I am using Ninja Trader version 7.0.1000.25 either 64-bit or 32-bit
    All the API settings in TWS are configured as per your instructions.

    When trying to connect Ninja Trader, I see the TWS logon pop-up, it gets populated with the correct IB user name and password, and TWS starts correctly. However, Ninja Trader still says "Connecting" and it never seems to see that TWS is connected. Also, the pop-up pages from TWS do not go away. After a few seconds the logon times out and repeats, and finally Ninja Trader gives up and reports that the connection failed.

    When you first setup TWS, did you select Mosaic or Classic mode for the Workstation?

      eFloorTrader Mosaic v Classic

      Does it make a difference? I don't remember how I installed it, but when I start it, both Mosaic and Classic windows start simultaneously.

        NinjaTrader requires that the mosaic mode be enabled.

          Not connecting through IB

          Now the Classic mode does not start automatically, only the Mosaic mode starts. Still, NinjaTrader times out and does not connect even after re-trying a couple of times. Are there any other data settings that need to be configured? Any other known problems?

            Please use the steps I have provided below to remove, repair and recreate your connection within NinjaTrader:
            • Please go to the Tools menu--> select Account Connections--> highlight the connection--> click Remove
            • Restart NinjaTrader
            • Please go to the Tools menu--> select Account Connections and recreate the account connection.

            The following link will take you thru the steps required to recreate your connection to IB.


            Please let me know if you can then connect successfully.

              Still does not connect

              I have tried that process. Also tried rebooting the computer, just in case. I have re-installed the connection and tried it with both Ninja Trader and Ninja Trader 64-bit. Nothing seems to make it work.

              Could it be related to Kaspersky anti-virus? That is a new product for me, so I don't know whether it could interfere or not.

              Running Windows 8.1 with all the latest patches up to date, and the latest Java (updated today).

              Would it help you to look at some logs? Please let me know how to turn on the logs and where the logs are, and I can send them to you.

                Please send a note to Support [AT] NinjaTrader [DOT] com with "ATTN: Chris Jameson" in the subject line.

                In the message, please include the following:
                1.) A link to this forum thread.
                2.) Your most current trace and log files.

                You will find the file here: My Documents > NinjaTrader 7-> Trace > trace.YYYYMMDD.txt

                Log file will be located by going to Documents->NinjaTrader 7->Log->log.YYYYMMDD.txt

                    I got a call from a very knowledgeable support rep, Chris Jameson. He took over control of my desktop and fixed it in no time flat. I have put together a PDF with the instructions and I have attached it to this message.

                    The bottom line is that the generic TWS is a no-name version (white label) and you need to give it a name for the API to work correctly.

                    Also, as stated on this thread, NinjaTrader requires that the Mosaic mode be enabled in TWS.

                    The Ninja Trader instructions in http://www.ninjatrader.com/Connectio...tion-Guide.php are almost complete. If you follows those instructions and add the Titlebar like I explain in my PDF, it should all work.

                      Thanks for putting together the PDF document. Works like a charm! I can't believe that the support guys have not included these details in their setup instuctions (hint, hint ).

                          Same experience

                          Thanks for posting this. I just installed everything on a new system build and it didn't work until I found this post and followed the instructions in the attached pdf.

                            Error on loading data

                            Why do I get the message "No permissions for NYMEX market data FUT"? Do I have to configure TWS in some special way?, or do I have a IB subscription with access to NYMEX?

                              Hello Mikel,

                              The message is coming from your broker and it looks like your account is not set up for this. Please contact your broker and double check this with them.
