Preserving charts and drawings

What is the best practice for saving charts and any corresponding mark-ups so that the drawings are preserved for subsequent use? For example, if I have marked a chart with an Andrews pitchfork and then I want to close the chart for now but I intended to view the chart again later with original fork drawing preserved in the chart, what is the best approach? Simply closing the chart window will obviously close the chart and eliminate all the drawings. It would be important to consider opening and closing such a chart not only in one trading session but perhaps even multiple openings and closing in the same session.

Thank you for your post.

Drawing objects can be saved within the chart where they are drawn by saving that chart within a workspace. (File > Workspaces > Save Workspace)

Closing the chart where the drawing objects were added would result in the elimination of the added items as you mentioned however, provided that no further workspace changes are saved, restarting NinjaTrader can restore the chart and it's drawings.

Thank you. Is there a way to save a chart without saving the entire workspace. For example, if many charts are open at one time, It is often desirable to close one temporarily and then re-open it later a as more charts are considered? Saving an entire workspace might not be ideal so I am curious if three are other possibilities?

You can save a chart template. A chart template will save the chart setting, indicators and indicator settings.

You can save a chart template by right clicking on the chart, selecting Templates > Save As and naming the template.

I am familiar with chart templates, but I was not aware they would save drawings? Can you confirm that if i save a template the drawing will be there the next time I apply it? Thank you.

Chart templates will not save drawing objects. Chart templates save chart settings, indicators and indicator settings.

To maintain your drawing objects you will need to save the charts as part of a workspace.
