NT7 - CQG - AMP Futures combination extremely sluggish...

recently in the last month the performance of NT7 with CQG, and AMP Futures has been extremely sluggish. Where, when I try to click on the chart, even make a trade through the chart trader, or move the chart, it just becomes non-responsive for say 1+ minutes. I get the error in the chart window's title saying "not responding". Any idea what this is? I'm using an 8core machine, 8gigs ram, SSD HD.

    Hello funk101,

You can experience slow and unresponsive behavior in NinjaTrader if you have many charts, indicators and other windows opened depending on market volatility as well.

The 'Calculate on bar close' setting for indicators can be important. If set to False, the indicator will be calculated on each incoming tick. During high volatlity this can be very CPU intensive especially if the indicator makes complicated calculations. Please set it to True in the Indicator menu and the indicator will only be calculated at the end of each price bar.

If you have workspaces opened in the background which you do not use, we suggest to close such workspaces. Please go to Control Center-->File-->Workspaces and check what workspaces are listed below 'Save Workspace As'. The workspace with the checkmark is the workspace opened on your monitor(s). Any additional workspaces listed, are opened in the background.

Please select a workspace without the checkmark. Subsequently, go to Control Center-->File-->Workspaces-->Close Workspace. Repeat this procedure until only 1 workspace is opened. More tips and suggestions to improve the performance of NinjaTrader can be found at the link below.

I have 2 charts open, 1 workspace, I have volume, two oscillators and Keltner channels. Yes, they are all calculated real time. That is not the issue. I've had many more indicators, etc. in the past and never had this kind of non-responsive reaction. Please, do not tell me that NT *cannot* handle 4 indicators. That would really be lame these days. I've been using NT for many years, it is very rare that I would get this kind of sluggishness, and yes I used to have multiple workspaces open before. Is there any info I can send you that you possibly can see? I've also posted a message to AMP seeing if maybe they've heard something.

                Here you go...

NOTE: the biggest difference between the original poster and my situation is I do have several charts open (12). Also, some of the third party indicators have the "Calculate on Bar Close" set to False. For 2 reasons, I am hesitant to change this setting: (1) not sure if this is how the indicator was purposely developed; (2) Since my charts are set to 7-9 minutes, waiting can seem like an eternity.

Here is the details I sent to AMP futures regarding this same issue.
Since going live and trading, I am experiencing what appears to be some extremely significant lag/delay in the data.

I am not sure if it is when the trading day gets started in earnest (about 8:30 and certainly by 9:30). But this is really frustrating.

Basically what happens is when I click on a chart, the chart dims and I get the "...Not Responding" for about 5-10 seconds.

When it starts to "respond" again, I get a brief chance to do something else before I have to wait again for 5-10 seconds.

I have tried to disconnect the data feed and even gone so far as restarting NT.

I see on the NT support site, another AMP user is experiencing the exact same thing (see http://www.ninjatrader.com/support/f...244#post365244)

The files do not contain any errors. You can experience slow and unresponsive behavior in NinjaTrader if you have many charts, indicators and other windows opened depending on market volatility as well. Can you please set 'Calculate on bar close' to False for some indicators and check if this will improve performance. If the issue remains, please try some of the other tips and suggestions from the link below.

I have experienced the same sluggishness mentioned here previously by funk101 but I want to add something that may contribute to getting it resolved. I run two NTs on two different computers. Let me explain. I am situated in Europe and have a PC, of course. On that PC I run NT. But I also have a Remote DeskTop/Server located in the U.S. on which I am running NT as well. I pull that Remote Desk Top onto my home computer here. In other words, I look at two NTs on my screen: one is the NT in my computer, the other NT is on that Remote DeskTop Server. The connection of both NTs is to AMP and CQG.

Now, one of them, the Remote DeskTop behaves sluggish usually when the volatility in the market goes up, at market openings or news. It gets so bad that the incoming data hangs up NT for up to 2 minutes. BUT I have never had that problem on my home computer. The attached image should clarify the point. The instrument is CL. The chart to the left is on the Remote Desk Top, the one on the right is on my home computer. While the one on the right is already into a new bar, the chart on the left shows the prior bar still attempting to be drawn (and finished). It is impossible to trade that one.

Hope this data can help to isolate what causes this sluggishness.

                      Hello sandman,

Thank you for your forum post.

More tips and suggestions to improve the performance of NinjaTrader can be found at the link below.

It looks like the VPS experienced an issue while loading or updating the data on the chart. In these instances, NinjaTrader may still be receiving real-time data but the chart is no longer updating.

You can verify this if you check the Orders tab of the Control Center for a Bid/Ask/Last price appearing for the selected instrument on the "Name:" drop down menu or if you create another window that would receive data such as a Time & Sales or SuperDOM.

If you are receiving a Bid/Ask/Last price in these other windows and the price is updating in real-time you would be able to troubleshoot initially by right mouse clicking on the chart that froze > Reload all historical data.

If this does not help to resolve the situation, the next step I would suggest would be to reset your instruments and restart NinjaTrader:

When you perform an instrument reset, the following actions will occur:
                      • User added instruments will not be affected.
                      • Any changes you have made to the original instrument settings will be reset
                      • Any changed symbol mappings will be reset including changes made for use with the Automated Trading Interface.

                      • Disconnect from any data providers.
                      • Control Center > Tools > Options...
                      • Data tab > Reset Instruments
                      • Restart NinjaTrader

If you would like, I can work closer with you on these performance situations.

Thanks for the extensive response Ryan and that you'll work with me on this.

I already had tested in the last few weeks whether the number of charts on the VPS is part of the issue. I went as far as just having one chart open with no indicators. The same sluggish behavior (for lack of better words) happened.

BUT I go with your suggestion to have the ControlCenter's Orders tab open and/or a TimeandSales window to watch what happens there compared to what's happening on the charts. Perhaps the data does arrive alright. We will see tomorrow. I will then post the information here for you and we can take it from there.

Ryan. Okay I just ran into the same phenomenon on CL a bit after 9am Eastern. This time I watched not only the charts but also the DOM. Though the volume increased on CL, it affected the other charts as well. And the DOM "hung up" too.

This was on the VPS. On my computer everything behaved normal.

                          Awaiting your next input.

PS: I caught a screen shot a bit later for TF. Left is my computer, right is VPS chart and DOM. 3 ticks behind and "hung up" for a few seconds.

                            Hello sandman,

Thank you for the follow up.

One item you can take a look at would be to have the VPS company check to see if they can give the VPS more resources.

What are the PC specs for your VPS?

                            • Start > Right mouse click on Computer > Properties...
                            • What is the CPU and the amount of RAM ?

If possible, please send me the latest log and trace files from the VPS so that I can investigate the situation on my end.

I look forward to assisting you further.
